Soft Metals - The Remixes

The Remixes by Soft Metals: A Darkwave Gut-Punch That Still Stings in 2012 Alright, let’s get this straight—Soft Metals didn’t need no label to drop The Remixes, and honestly? That makes it hit even harder. Self-released under their own steam in the US back in 2012, this thing is a gritty little time capsule of darkwave, techno, and synth-pop vibes that just don’t quit. It's not perfect, but damn if it doesn’t claw its way into your brain like some neon-lit fever dream. First up, “Pain (Bondage Mix).” Yeah, I said it. This track grabs you by the throat from the jump. The bassline throbs like a heartbeat on overdrive while these icy synths slice through the mix like razors. You can feel every ounce of tension they’re throwing down here—it’s raw, unfiltered, and kinda sleazy in all the right ways. If you’ve ever been stuck in a smoke-filled basement with strobe lights flashing, this one’ll take you right back there. No lie, it’s one of those tracks where you forget where you are for a sec because it’s just THAT consuming. Then there’s “Do You Remember (Extended Mix),” which feels like someone took nostalgia and dipped it in acid. The original was solid, sure, but this remix stretches everything out until it becomes something else entirely. Those echoing vocals? They’re haunting as hell, man. Like, you’re walking alone at night, and suddenly you hear whispers behind you—but instead of freaking out, you kinda wanna dance. Weird flex, but okay. The build-up kills me every time; it’s slow-burning, almost teasing, before slamming you with this wall of sound that refuses to let go. Look, I ain’t gonna sugarcoat it—this album ain’t for everyone. Some people will call it messy or too experimental, but screw ‘em. What Soft Metals did here was bold as hell. They weren’t trying to fit into anyone’s box; they were making music that felt alive, dangerous even. Tracks like “Psychic Driving” and “Voices” keep that energy going, though nothing quite hits like the two bangers I mentioned earlier. Here’s the kicker, though: listening to The Remixes now feels like finding an old Polaroid photo you forgot about. It’s faded around the edges, yeah, but it still packs a punch. Maybe that’s why it sticks with me—because it’s not shiny or polished. It’s real, ugly-beautiful stuff that reminds me how good electronic music can be when it stops playing it safe. Oh, and hey—one last thing. Ever notice how sometimes the best albums come from artists who refuse to follow the rules? Yeah, exactly. Now go listen to this before algorithms bury it forever.

About Soft Metals

Soft Metals is the electronic romance of Ian Hicks and Patricia Hall of Portland, Oregon played on vintage synthesizers and drum machines. Brought together in April of 2009 through a common love of late 70s to early 80s analog synthesizer music, they decided to meet up and write some songs. Inspiration came to them by way of experimental noise and avant garde, early industrial music, minimal synth, 1980s Chicago house, synth pop, and italo disco. Building their songs from moody, experimental, and improvised sessions together, they never know what influence will have the upper hand. Its simplest to say Soft Metals make dark, romantic, electronic dance music.
