Review by Richard Raats

Alright, buckle up. Kid Creole and The Coconuts’ Stool Pigeon Special Ze/Island Remix isn’t just another dusty relic from 1982—it’s a disco-electronic bombshell that punches you right in the gut. Released on Island Records with some ZE Records spice, this thing screams UK swagger while keeping its feet planted firmly in the neon-lit dancefloors of the early '80s. First off, let’s talk about the remix of “Stool Pigeon.” Damn. This track is like being hit by a glitter cannon at full blast. It's sleazy, funky, and dripping with attitude. You can practically smell the smoke machines and cheap booze when it kicks in. The beat? Relentless. The bassline? So greasy it should come with a napkin. What makes this version unforgettable is how they stretched out the original into something wilder—like someone took the song behind the club and gave it a makeover against its will. By the time those horns kick in halfway through, you’re not just dancing; you're losing your damn mind. And then there’s... uh, well, honestly, I don’t even need to mention another track because "Stool Pigeon" owns this whole damn record. But if I had to throw one more out there, it’d be whatever filler track sneaks in after the main event—it doesn’t matter. That remix IS the album. Everything else feels like an afterthought, but hey, sometimes you only need one killer tune to leave a mark. Here’s the kicker: listening to this now feels kinda weird. Like, did people really party THIS hard back then? Or was everyone just high on optimism and bad fashion choices? Either way, Stool Pigeon Special Ze/Island Remix reminds me why disco never truly died—it just mutated into something weirder, louder, and way more fun. So yeah, crank this up if you wanna feel like you’re crashing a secret underground rave in Thatcher-era London. Just don’t blame me when your neighbors start complaining—they clearly don’t understand greatness when they hear it.

Their debut album was critically well-received but not successful commercially. Their international breakthrough came with their third album, 1982's Tropical Gangsters, which hit #3 in the UK and spun off three Top 10 hits with Stool Pigeon, Annie, I'm Not Your Daddy and I'm A Wonderful Thing, Baby ; Dear Addy also made the Top 40. In the US the album was retitled Wise Guy and reached #145, and I'm a Wonderful Thing, Baby flirted with the R&B charts. Dixit Darnell: "In the Savannah Band Id modelled my style on 1930s/40s jazz singer and showman Cab Calloway, and I created Kid Creole as an extreme version of that, a sort of lounge lizard/bon vivant or what an ex-girlfriend called a lovable rogue."
