The Living Strings And The Living Voices - This Ones For You

Album Review: This One’s For You by The Living Strings and The Living Voices Released in 1979, This One’s For You is like that one friend who shows up uninvited but somehow makes the party better. It’s a smooth blend of pop, stage, and screen vibes with a generous helping of light music and theme tunes. Produced under the watchful eye of Ethel Gabriel (a name that sounds like it belongs to your grandma’s favorite soap opera villain), this album was released on RCA Music Service—a label that clearly didn’t skimp on the talent or the orchestral budget. Let’s get into the nitty-gritty. With tracks like "When I Need You" and "What I Did For Love," you’d think this album would be drowning in saccharine sweetness. But nope—it’s more like sipping hot cocoa while wearing fuzzy socks. Johnny Douglas and Roland Shaw handle most of the arrangements, sprinkling their magic fairy dust over everything they touch. And Bernard Ebbinghouse? He swoops in for just one track (C3, because why not?) and manages to make it sound like he owns the place. Now let me tell ya about two tracks that stuck in my brain like gum on a shoe: "Nadia's Theme (The Young And The Restless)" If there’s ever been a piece of music designed to make you feel both classy and slightly melancholic at the same time, this is it. You know those moments when you’re staring out a rainy window, pretending life isn’t passing you by? Yeah, this song fits perfectly. The Living Strings give it an ethereal vibe, and suddenly you’re imagining yourself as the lead character in some black-and-white movie where everyone smokes cigarettes dramatically. Bonus points for being iconic enough to become synonymous with soap operas forever. "Yesterday Once More" Okay, confession time—I didn’t even realize this cover existed until now. But wow, does it slap. The Living Voices take what could’ve been a snooze-fest and turn it into something warm and nostalgic. It’s like hanging out with an old buddy who still remembers all your embarrassing high school stories. Sure, it doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but sometimes you don’t need reinvention—you just want comfort food for your ears. Other highlights include "Music Box Dancer" (which will haunt your dreams in the best way possible) and "You Don’t Bring Me Flowers" (because nothing screams romance like passive-aggressive duets). Meanwhile, "Day By Day" reminds us that yes, musical theater can totally hold its own next to soft rock ballads. The production value here is nuts. Like, A&R guy Gerald P. Plano must’ve had a clipboard bigger than his ego to keep track of all these moving parts. Kudos also go to photographer David B. Hecht, whose work probably made the album cover look fancier than anyone expected from a record titled This One’s For You. So, what’s the verdict? Is this album worth your time? Absolutely—if you’re into lush orchestrations, easy-listening vibes, and songs that remind you of simpler times. If nothing else, it’s proof that 1979 wasn’t all disco balls and bell-bottoms. Final thought: Listening to this album feels like finding a dusty vinyl in your attic and realizing it’s secretly gold. Or maybe it’s just nostalgia talking. Either way, I’m keeping it on rotation… right after my ABBA playlist.
