Lord Jellicoe At The Sheraton: A Time Capsule of Calypso Vibes and Mento Magic Alright, let’s talk about Lord Jellicoe At The Sheraton. Released in ‘65 by Lord Jellicoe & His Calypso Monarchs, this album is like a warm Caribbean breeze on a vinyl record. It floats between reggae grooves and pop sensibilities but keeps its roots firmly planted in mento and calypso traditions. If you’re into tropical rhythms, cheeky lyrics, and melodies that stick to your brain like mango juice on a hot day, this one’s for you. The album hops across two worlds—Jamaica and the US—and it wears its dual identity proudly. With labels like Island Music and Hilary backing it up, plus Clifford Rae producing and A. Iton engineering, the whole thing has this polished yet raw feel. Like they knew exactly what they were doing but weren’t trying too hard to impress anyone. Now, onto the tracks. You’ve got classics like “Jamaica Farewell” and “Yellow Bird,” which are just begging to be played at sunset with a cold drink in hand. But if I had to pick two standouts, I’d go with “Shame And Scandal” and “Big Bamboo.” “Shame And Scandal” is pure storytelling gold. It’s got this sly humor running through it, where Lord Jellicoe basically calls out relationship drama without breaking a sweat. The melody bounces along so sweetly that you almost forget how brutally honest the lyrics are. Something about the way he delivers lines makes me grin every time—it’s like gossip over a steel drum beat. This track sticks because it feels timeless; people still deal with the same love triangle mess today, and somehow hearing it set to calypso makes it sting less. Then there’s “Big Bamboo.” Oh man, this tune hits different. It’s playful, flirty, and kinda mysterious all at once. There’s something hypnotic about the rhythm—it pulls you in like you’re walking barefoot through a jungle path lined with fireflies. The imagery in the lyrics is vivid enough to paint pictures in your head, but vague enough to leave room for imagination. Every time I hear it, I can almost smell the sea salt and hear palm leaves rustling. It’s escapism wrapped up in three minutes of pure vibe. The rest of the album? Solid as heck. Tracks like “Mary Ann” and “Island Woman” keep the energy high, while slower numbers like “Wings Of A Dove” give you moments to breathe. Even covers like “Matilda” get their own unique spin here, blending nostalgia with fresh island flair. What strikes me most about Lord Jellicoe At The Sheraton is how effortlessly it bridges cultures. Back in ‘65, when global music wasn’t nearly as interconnected as it is now, this album was already mixing Jamaican sounds with American pop appeal. It’s proof that good music doesn’t need borders or fancy marketing—it just needs heart and soul. And here’s the kicker: listening to this record feels like stepping into a time machine, except instead of landing in some futuristic sci-fi world, you end up smack dab in the middle of a beach party from decades ago. Weirdly comforting, right? So grab a copy (if you can find one!) and let Lord Jellicoe remind you why life’s better with a little calypso chaos.

This YouTube presentation is marred by the lousy audio of whatever source was being used. I’m thinking worn and scratched vinyl from way back when. These songs are not that rare that one couldn’t find a better audio of this entire album. I guess Mr. invigorate had only this used crappy copy. Much of the charm and key points has been lost. egs, the song , “Shame and Scandal”. The punchline was obliterated. It should’ve been: “his mama she said go man go your daddy ain’t your daddy but your daddy don’t know “

Invigoration, you should’ve listed the various song titles! Jellicoe was big. When I bought the cassette tape of this album (Montego Bay Airport 1972) Ska and Reggae were already well entrenched musical genres butLord Jellicoe was outselling all music in that store. I prefer the risqué lyrics and simple (authentic) Calypso rhythms over the sanitized island music introduced to the world in 1956 by Harry Belafonte (pre-Reggae). I still perform a medley of two Calypso songs; Osland In the Sun and Jamaica Farewell using the style I found in this album. You can almost see the women on the lawn chairs poolside at “The Sheraton”. Listen, Matilda” when L. J. calls, “women over forty” (and of course no-one joins in because the gals won’t admit to it!!
