Album Review: Perspective Musique ContemporainePopJazz by Michel Herr & Wolfgang Engstfeld Alright, let’s dive into this gem of an album that feels like a time capsule from 1978. Perspective Musique ContemporainePopJazz is one of those records where you can almost smell the dimly lit jazz club in Belgium where it probably came to life. With its mix of Contemporary Jazz vibes and a dash of Stage & Screen drama, it’s got layers—like your favorite lasagna but with saxophones. First off, props to the team behind this masterpiece: Michel Herr on piano and keys, Wolfgang Engstfeld blowing magic through his tenor and soprano saxophones, Bruno Castellucci keeping the groove tight on drums (and wearing his producer hat), Wim Essed laying down some serious double bass lines, and Alan Ward making sure everything sounds crisp as hell. This crew wasn’t messing around. Now, onto the tracks. I gotta shout out “Stratus” because… wow. It’s smooth, man. Like butter-on-hot-toast smooth. The electric piano just glides over the rhythm section while Engstfeld’s sax floats above it all like a bird chilling in the sky. There’s something about how the track builds—it starts mellow but sneaks up on you until BAM, you’re fully immersed. You don’t even realize it at first, but suddenly you’re nodding along like, "Yeah, this is my jam." Then there’s “Long Nights,” which hits different. It’s darker, moodier, and has this lingering vibe that sticks with you long after it ends. Herr’s piano work here is hauntingly beautiful, and when the sax kicks in, it’s like someone whispering secrets in your ear. Not creepy secrets, though—more like the kind that make you think, “Ohhh, okay, I get it now.” It’s perfect for late-night drives or staring out rainy windows while pretending you’re in a noir film. What makes this album stand out isn’t just the music—it’s the chemistry between everyone involved. You can tell these guys were vibing hard in the studio. And hey, kudos to Selection Records for putting it out back in the day. These tunes still slap nearly 50 years later, which says a lot. Here’s the thing: listening to this record feels like finding an old photograph tucked inside a book. It reminds you of a moment you weren’t part of, yet somehow connects with you anyway. Unexpected bonus? It made me want to learn the saxophone. Or at least try again after failing miserably in middle school band. So yeah, thanks for that, Michel and Wolfgang. If you haven’t heard Perspective Musique ContemporainePopJazz, do yourself a favor and give it a spin. Just don’t blame me if you start randomly quoting Belgian jazz trivia at parties.
