Kangaroobeercity: A Riot of Hardcore Punk Fury from 1997 Alright, let’s cut the crap. If you’re into raw, unfiltered hardcore punk with a side of rock grit, Kangaroobeercity by Various is your jam. Released in 1997 under Kangaroo Records (yep, Dutch pride!), this album doesn’t mess around. It’s like someone took all the rage and frustration of the ‘90s underground scene, threw it into a blender, and hit puree. What came out? This chaotic masterpiece that kicks you square in the teeth. First off, forget polished production—this sucker sounds like it was recorded live in someone’s sweaty basement. And honestly? That’s what makes it so damn good. The tracks are short, sharp, and relentless, just how punk should be. Out of the whole tracklist, two songs stuck to my brain like gum on a shoe: “Combat Zone” and “No Gods.” “Combat Zone” hits hard right outta the gate. The opening riff slaps you awake, and before you know it, the vocals are screaming bloody murder about survival or rebellion—or maybe both? Who cares! It’s loud, pissed-off perfection. You can practically smell the mosh pit sweat while listening to this one. Every time I hear those drums pounding away, I wanna punch something—or start a riot. Either works. Then there’s “No Gods,” which feels like an anthem for anyone who hates authority figures as much as they hate their day job. The lyrics spit venom at anyone pretending to have power over us, and damn if that doesn’t resonate. By the second chorus, you’ll find yourself shouting along even though half the words sound like they were growled through clenched teeth. It’s not pretty, but it’s real—and sometimes ugly truths hit harder than sugarcoated lies. The rest of the album keeps up the pace, tearing through bangers like “American Disaster” and “Pressure” without giving listeners room to breathe. Tracks like “Intro” and “Subrosa” throw in some variety, but don’t expect any chill moments here. This isn’t background music—it demands your attention. What’s wild is how fresh this record still feels today. Sure, it came out in '97, but its anger hasn’t aged a day. Maybe that says more about society than we’d like to admit. Or maybe it just proves great punk never dies. Whatever the case, Kangaroobeercity reminds me why I fell in love with hardcore punk in the first place: it’s raw, reckless, and refuses to play nice. So grab a beer, crank up the volume, and let these Dutch punks remind you what real rebellion sounds like. Just don’t blame me when your neighbors complain—they wouldn’t get it anyway. Oh, and one last thing: whoever thought naming a label "Kangaroo Records" was a good idea deserves a medal. Totally random, totally rad.

Definitely spun this about a month ago. Pretty cool that 3 bands on here are from my home town and one of my favorites, out cold!
