4E - The Gentle Killer

Review by Patricia VanDamme

The Gentle Killer by 4E: A Techno Odyssey You Didn’t Know You Needed Let’s get one thing straight—when you hear “The Gentle Killer,” don’t expect some soft, cuddly synth fairy tale. Nope. This 2016 gem from Khan Off Fistland (who wrote AND produced the whole shebang) is more like an electrified slap to the face. It’s raw, unfiltered techno and electro vibes served up with a side of attitude. Released via Not On Label (Khan Self-released) and Sockett, this album feels like it crawled out of Fistland itself—a mythical place where beats are king and basslines rule supreme. Now, let’s talk tracks because that’s what you’re here for. First up, “Warm Leatherette.” Oh man, this track slaps harder than your morning coffee buzz. The pulsing rhythm grabs you by the collar and whispers, “You’re staying awake now, buddy.” There’s something hypnotic about its mechanical groove—it’s not overly complicated, but dang if it doesn’t burrow into your brain like an earworm on steroids. Fun fact? This track appears three times under slightly different spellings (Warm Lethereth, Warm Leatherettte), which might be lazy or genius depending on how much caffeine you’ve had today. Either way, it sticks. Then there’s “Next (Who's Dead?)”, a haunting little number that sounds like what happens when robots go through an existential crisis. Is it bouncy? Yes. Is it creepy? Absolutely. The repetition of those icy synths gives off serious “abandoned warehouse at 3 AM” energy, and honestly? I love it. If you’ve ever wondered what techno would sound like after humanity goes extinct, well…here’s your answer. Other standouts include “Mind Frame,” which feels like a fever dream trapped inside a circuit board, and the titular track, “Gentle Killer,” which lives up to its name in the most ironic way possible. It’s less ‘gentle’ and more ‘I will destroy you with sub-bass.’ What makes The Gentle King Killer so memorable isn’t just its relentless beats—it’s the sheer personality dripping off every note. Sure, it’s self-released, so you won’t find glossy production values or polished edges. But maybe that’s the charm. It’s gritty, imperfect, and weirdly human for something so steeped in machine music. Final thought? Listening to this album feels like shaking hands with a cyborg who secretly loves poetry. Or maybe getting chased by one. Who knows. All I can say is, if you dig techno and electro that punches as hard as it thinks, give The Gentle Killer a spin. Just don’t blame me if your neighbors start filing noise complaints. Oh, and hey—if anyone finds Fistland, send me a postcard.
