Give Up The Ghost - Year One

Review by John Mijac

Year One by Give Up The Ghost: A Raw, Unfiltered Blast from 2001 If you’re into music that punches you in the gut and makes your heart race, Year One by Give Up The Ghost is a wild ride worth taking. This album came out in 2001—a time when punk rock was still raw, unapologetic, and full of attitude—and it’s got all the grit and energy you’d expect from bands like this. With genres spanning Pop/Rock to Hardcore Punk, and styles dipping into Alternative/Indie Rock and Punk Revival, there’s something here for everyone who likes their tunes loud and honest. The record jumps between tracks recorded live on the BBC (like “AM/PM” and “Farewell”) and studio cuts packed with emotion and intensity. You can tell these guys weren’t just phoning it in; every song feels alive, chaotic even, but in the best way possible. Standout Tracks That Stuck With Me Let’s talk about two tracks that really stuck with me: “There’s a Black Hole in the Shadow of the Pru” and “Please Die!”. First up, “Black Hole.” Man, this track hits hard. It starts off moody, almost eerie, before exploding into this wall of sound that grabs you by the throat. Wes’s vocals are raw and desperate, like he’s pouring everything he has into those lyrics. And then there’s the breakdowns—oh man, they hit like a freight train. I remember listening to this one late at night, headphones on, feeling like my brain was gonna explode. There’s something haunting about the imagery too, like the Pru building casting its shadow over everything. It’s not just a song; it’s an experience. Then there’s “Please Die!” which is… well, exactly what it sounds like. It’s short, sharp, and brutal—basically a middle finger to whatever or whoever pissed them off. Sometimes you need a song like this to scream along to when life gets overwhelming. The production is tight enough to let the chaos shine through without losing clarity. Plus, the drums? Insane. Whoever Jesse is, they crushed it on this track. Behind the Scenes Vibes One cool thing about Year One is how much thought went into making it. J. Bannon handled design and art direction, while Linas Garsys brought killer illustrations to life. The whole aesthetic feels gritty and DIY, perfectly matching the vibe of the music. Kurt Ballou produced and engineered the album, so you know the sound quality is legit—it’s polished enough to be listenable but rough around the edges where it counts. And props to Colin Decker for mastering because, honestly, mastering hardcore punk isn’t easy. He nailed it, giving each track the punch it needed. Shoutout to Dean Baltulonis for mixing most of the songs too—he kept things balanced without killing the energy. Final Thoughts Listening to Year One feels like stepping back in time to a sweaty basement show where everyone’s screaming along and no one cares if they leave covered in bruises. It’s messy, emotional, and completely authentic. If you haven’t heard it yet, do yourself a favor and check it out. Just don’t blame me if your neighbors start complaining. Oh, and here’s a random thought: I bet if aliens landed tomorrow and asked us to explain human emotions through music, we could just hand them this album. They’d get it instantly.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a cool fact: The album *Year One* by Give Up The Ghost is like a chaotic mixtape of punk energy and hardcore grit. It’s wild how many hands shaped this record—Kurt Ballou not only engineered and produced it but also helped craft its raw sound. And get this: Linas Garsys created the cover art, blending visuals that feel as intense as the music itself. Oh, and if you’re into live tracks, they threw in BBC recordings like "AM/PM" and "Farewell," giving fans a taste of their explosive performances. It’s kinda funny how much passion can fit onto one album, right?
