The Typhoons Les Carle - Sweets For My Sweet You Can Never Stop Me Loving You

Back in '63, when the world was groovin' to black-and-white TV and bell-bottoms hadn’t quite hit their stride yet, The Typhoons Les Carle dropped a little gem of an album that still makes me smile. Sweets For My Sweet You Can Never Stop Me Loving You—yeah, it’s a mouthful, but so is the music inside. This pop record came out swinging in both the Netherlands and the UK under labels like Discofoon and Embassy. And let me tell ya, it's got charm oozing outta every track. First up, “You Can Never Stop Me Loving You.” Man, this tune feels like someone handed you a warm cup of cocoa on a cold day—it just hits right. It’s one of those songs where the melody sneaks up on you without asking permission. Before you know it, you're humming along, kinda embarrassed because your singing voice sounds like a dying cat. But who cares? James Wright (the guy directing things) really nailed the vibe here; it’s sweet but not too sugary, with vocals smooth enough to slide across without leaving a mark. I remember hearing this for the first time on some dusty old turntable at my uncle’s place. He kept saying, “This’ll take you back,” but all I could think about was how fresh it sounded—even now. Then there’s “Sweets For My Sweet.” Oh boy, if this doesn’t get stuck in your head faster than bubblegum under a school desk, check your pulse. There’s something magical about its bouncy rhythm and playful lyrics—it’s impossible NOT to tap your foot or bob your head. Every time I hear it, I picture myself cruising down a sunlit street in a convertible, wind messin’ up my hair while life feels easy breezy. That’s the power of good pop: simple, catchy, timeless. What gets me most about this album isn’t just the music—it’s the vibe. Like, imagine walking into a retro diner where everything smells faintly of vinyl and cherry soda. The whole thing has this fuzzy nostalgia wrapped around it, like a cozy blanket your grandma knitted by hand. Sure, production values were basic compared to today’s studio wizardry, but sometimes raw edges make the heart grow fonder. Here’s the kicker though: listening to this record reminds me why we fall in love with music in the first place. It’s not about perfection—it’s about connection. Whether it’s the crackle of static between tracks or the way certain notes seem to wobble ever-so-slightly off-key, these imperfections give the album soul. Soul that sticks around long after the needle lifts off the record. So yeah, hats off to The Typhoons Les Carle for crafting something so unpretentious and fun. If they’d released this today, people would probably overanalyze it to death, turning it into some deep metaphorical masterpiece. But nah, it’s better as-is—a slice of pure, unfiltered joy from a simpler era. Now excuse me while I go find that imaginary convertible…

About The Typhoons Les Carle

The Typhoons name was coined in February 1963 as Embassy (UK) found themselves covering increasingly more records by beat bands rather than the more traditional solo singer recordings that had dominated the hit parade in previous years. Ray Pilgrim and Mike Redway recorded the first Typhoons track for Embassy on 7th February 1963 ... which probably made them the worlds very first recording Beatles tribute band! The Typhoons only existed as a studio band. The actual singers involved were in fact chosen from Embassys existing roster of artists. From 1963 to 1965 there were 62 songs credited on the label as The Typhoons. Ray Pilgrim sang on 29 of them, Mike Redway sang on 20, Ken Barrie on 13, Tony Crane on 19, Joan Baxter on 3, and Paul Rich on 1.n

Embassy was a Woolworths label. Copied all the big hits. Sold me cheap.
