Brian Culbertson - Another Long Night Out

Review by Cammie B.

Another Long Night Out by Brian Culbertson: A Jazz Odyssey Worth Losing Sleep Over Alright, let’s get this straight—Brian Culbertson’s Another Long Night Out isn’t just another smooth jazz album. Released back in 2014 under BCM Entertainment, this thing is a genre-blurring beast that slaps harder than most of what you’ve heard lately. It’s got everything from contemporary vibes to crossover grooves, and man, it doesn’t hold back. If you’re into jazz but bored outta your skull with the same old elevator music crap, this record might just slap you awake. Let’s dive into two tracks that’ll stick in your head like gum on a hot sidewalk: “Long Night Out” and “Heroes of the Dawn.” First up, “Long Night Out.” This track kicks off with a vibe so slick it feels like walking into a smoky club where everyone's cooler than you. The version featuring Candy Dulfer hits different—it’s like she showed up just to remind us all why saxophones still matter. That horn line slices through the mix like butter, and Culbertson’s keys are doing some kind of sorcery in the background. You don’t listen to this one; you feel it. Honestly, if I had to pick one song to play while driving nowhere fast at 2 AM, this would be it. No contest. Then there’s “Heroes of the Dawn,” which comes in two flavors—one solo and one stacked with Eric Marienthal and Rick Braun. Both versions hit hard, but the collab version is next-level fire. Marienthal’s sax work? Unreal. And Rick Braun on trumpet? Dude sounds like he’s channeling pure sunlight. It’s big, bold, and kinda makes you wanna stand on a cliff yelling something dramatic. Like, who even needs words when music punches you right in the soul like this? The rest of the album keeps the energy alive with cuts like “City Lights” (feat. Lee Ritenour) and “Changing Tides” (feat. Jonathan Butler). These songs aren’t just filler—they bring their own swagger to the table. But honestly, after hearing those first two bangers, the whole project starts feeling less like an album and more like a party you never want to leave. Now here’s the kicker: for all its polish and star-studded features, Another Long Night Out feels raw in the best way possible. Culbertson didn’t just phone this one in—he poured every ounce of his talent into making something that feels alive. At times, it’s almost too much to handle, like drinking espresso shots while running a marathon. But hey, sometimes jazz needs to knock you sideways instead of lulling you to sleep. So yeah, give this album a spin. Whether you’re vibing alone or trying to impress someone who thinks they know music, it delivers. Just don’t blame me if you find yourself staying up till sunrise hitting repeat. Oh, and one last thing—if Brian Culbertson ever decides to drop a live version of this album, we’re buying tickets immediately. End of story.

Born January 12, 1973, Brian is a smooth jazz musician and instrumentalist from Decatur, Illinois, United States. Son of jazz band director and trumpeter Jim Culbertson, Brian's instruments include the keyboard and trombone. Brian Culbertson began his quest in music at the age of 8 on piano, adding drums at 9, trombone at 10 then bass at 12. He grew up loving genre-crossing jazz-pop artists such as Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears, Tower of Power, the Brecker Brothers, David Sanborn, Yellowjackets and Chick Corea. So passionate and naturally gifted was Brian that his 7th grade piano recital consisted of all original music. He flourished in high school bands with his father, Jim Culbertson, as the school's award-winning jazz band director, then went on to compose commercial jingles for clients such as United Airlines, Oldsmobile, Sears and McDonald's in Chicago 's competitive advertising community. Heavily influenced by funk, much of Culbertson's material is funk-based instrumental, but in recent years has called upon vocalists such as Trey Lorenz and Kenny Lattimore to add to his pieces. Brian Culbertson also works with many other musicians in the smooth jazz arena, often as a composer and arranger. Culbertson is currently credited with working with Dave Koz, Peter White, Richard Elliot, Jeff Lorber, Michael Lington and legendary A&M Records composer and producer, Herb Alpert to name but a few.
