Carlos Franzetti’s Graffiti: A Sonic Mural That Sticks Carlos Franzetti’s 2007 album Graffiti is like a musical tag on the wall of your brain—once you hear it, you can’t scrub it off. This record isn’t just another jazz-fusion project; it’s a genre-blurring masterpiece that hops between Latin grooves, funky basslines, soulful sax riffs, and even some disco shimmer. Released in the US and Germany via Guinness Records and Sonorama, Graffiti feels both nostalgic and fresh, as if Franzetti raided his record collection from the '70s but gave everything an upgrade for modern ears. Franzetti wears more hats than a milliner here—he composed, arranged, produced, played piano (and electric piano), tickled synthesizers, wrote liner notes, AND sang? Yeah, dude does everything. And while he’s clearly the star of this show, props go to Ray Mantilla on congas and percussion, Victor Venegas holding down the electric bass, and Dick "Taco" Meza blowing sweet lines on soprano sax and flute. Together, they create a vibe that’s part dance party, part late-night chill session. Now let me tell ya about two tracks that stuck with me like gum under a subway seat: “Cocoa Funk” and “Lady Soho.” “Cocoa Funk” hits hard right outta the gate—it’s got this slinky bassline that feels like walking through Harlem at midnight, where every step echoes coolness. The drums are tight without being stiff, and Franzetti’s keys weave around like a cat chasing shadows. It’s not flashy or overdone; instead, it lets the groove breathe. You don’t listen to “Cocoa Funk”—you feel it. By the time Taco’s sax solo kicks in, you’re already nodding along like, “Yeah, I’ve been waiting my whole life for this moment.” Honestly, if this track doesn’t make you want to move, check your pulse. Then there’s “Lady Soho,” which flips the script entirely. This one’s smoother than a silk scarf sliding across a polished bar counter. The flute takes center stage here, floating above gentle rhythms and lush chords. There’s something cinematic about it—it could soundtrack a spy thriller or a romantic getaway in equal measure. But what really seals the deal is how effortlessly all the elements blend together. Every note feels intentional yet spontaneous, like Franzetti and his crew were vibing so hard in the studio they forgot anyone else would ever hear it. What makes Graffiti stand out isn’t just its technical brilliance (though yeah, that’s undeniable). It’s the way it captures a mood—a mix of nostalgia, playfulness, and raw creativity. Listening to it feels like flipping through old Polaroids while sipping espresso at a café you’ve never been to before. And here’s the kicker: despite all the talent involved, nothing feels forced or pretentious. Sure, Carlos Franzetti basically did everything short of designing the album cover himself, but it never comes off as ego-driven. Instead, it feels like he just couldn’t trust anyone else to get inside his head and pull out these sounds. So, yeah, Graffiti might not change your life, but it’ll definitely color it brighter for a while. Like actual graffiti, it’s messy, bold, and impossible to ignore—and maybe that’s why it sticks around long after the music stops.
