Album Review: Kiss the Boys Goodbye by Laurindo de Almeida (Performed by Elsa Sigfúss & Gunnar Lemvigh) Alright, let’s talk about this little gem of an album. Released way back in 1941 in Iceland—yeah, you read that right, Iceland—this record blends classical vibes with folk and world music influences. It’s like someone took a globe, spun it, and said, “Let’s mix all these sounds together!” The label? His Master’s Voice. Classic name for a classic sound. The album’s title track, Kiss the Boys Goodbye, is one of those tunes that sticks with you. Maybe it’s the bittersweet vibe or how Elsa Sigfúss’s voice just floats over the melody like a soft breeze. You can almost picture her standing on a cliffside, waving at ships sailing off into the horizon. I mean, who hasn’t felt that pang of saying goodbye to someone special? It’s emotional but not over-the-top, which makes it kinda perfect. Then there’s Laurindo de Almeida. This track feels more like a warm hug than a song. Gunnar Lemvigh brings a richness to the instrumentation that feels both earthy and refined. It’s got this subtle Latin flair (shoutout to Laurindo de Almeida himself!) mixed with Nordic chill. Honestly, it’s the kind of tune that could make even your grumpy neighbor crack a smile. What’s wild about this album is how it came out during such a chaotic time in history—World War II was raging, and yet here’s this little project from Iceland, blending genres and cultures like it didn’t have a care in the world. Feels like proof that music really can be a safe space when everything else feels messy. So, if you’re into albums that feel like time machines, grab a cup of coffee, sit back, and give this one a spin. Just don’t blame me if you start daydreaming about Icelandic fjords or Brazilian beaches halfway through. Oh, and hey—if anyone knows where I can find more stuff from Elsa Sigfúss, hit me up. This lady’s voice deserves way more attention!
