Technical Space Composer's Crew - Canaxis 5

Canaxis 5: A Sonic Time Capsule That Still Feels Weirdly Fresh Alright, let’s talk about Canaxis 5, the brainchild of Technical Space Composer's Crew (which is just a fancy way to say Holger Czukay and his pals). Released in 1969—yeah, the same year Apollo 11 landed on the moon—this album sounds like what might happen if aliens got their hands on an Earth radio station. It’s part rock, part folk, part ambient electronica, with dashes of classical thrown in for good measure. Oh, and did I mention it bounces between Japan, Germany, and Europe? Talk about a musical passport stamp collection. The genres are all over the place, but that’s kind of the charm here. You’ve got experimental vibes layered over world music textures, like someone took global folk tunes and ran them through a blender set to "spacy." And don’t even get me started on the labels involved—P-Vine Records, Grönland Records, Revisited Rec., Music Factory—it’s like they couldn’t decide where this thing belonged either. Spoiler alert: neither can you when you listen to it. Now, onto the tracks. Let’s zoom in on two standouts from this oddball masterpiece: "Boat Woman Song" (or Ho-Mai-Nhi, depending on your mood) This track feels like floating down a river at sunset while someone whispers secrets into your ear. The melody loops hypnotically, blending Vietnamese vocals with dreamy electronic tinkering. If you’re not careful, you’ll find yourself zoning out, staring blankly at your ceiling fan for hours. But hey, isn’t that what great ambient music does? Makes mundane moments feel profound? Either way, it’s unforgettable because it’s so dang soothing yet slightly unsettling—like watching clouds morph into shapes that look vaguely sinister. "Shock Eyes Ammunition" Okay, first off, what a name, right? This one hits harder than its cousin “Shook Eyes Ammunition” (yes, both exist; no, I don’t know why). It’s less floaty boat ride and more chaotic fever dream. There’s a rawness to the bassline, thanks to Holger Czukay pulling double duty as producer and bassist. It grooves without really trying, like a jazz musician who accidentally wandered into a krautrock session. By the time the distorted echoes kick in, you realize you’ve been nodding along to something that probably shouldn’t work—but somehow totally does. --- So yeah, Canaxis 5 is weird. Like, really weird. But it’s also brilliant. It’s the kind of album that makes you question everything you thought you knew about music—and maybe life itself. Was it ahead of its time? Absolutely. Does it still hold up today? Surprisingly, yes. Listening to it feels like stumbling upon a hidden artifact from another dimension. And honestly, isn’t that what we’re all secretly hoping for when we dive into old albums? Not just nostalgia, but discovery. Something that reminds us how vast and strange the universe of sound can be. So go ahead, give it a spin. Just don’t blame me if you start hearing whispers in your sleep afterward.

About Technical Space Composer's Crew

Inspired by his studies with Karlheinz Stockhausen, fascination with radios, electronics and multi-tracking studio and collage techniques, Holger Czukay together with technician/engineer Rolf Dammers decided to try and create their own works.

Interesting fact about Album

Did you know that the album *Canaxis 5* by Technical Space Composer's Crew is a hidden gem from 1969? It’s wild how this record blends so many genres—rock, folk, electronic, even classical—into one experimental masterpiece. Holger Czukay, who later became famous with the band Can, played a huge role in creating it. He wasn’t just the producer; he also engineered, edited, and even played bass on the album. Fun fact: the track "Boat Woman Song" appears twice, but with slightly different titles. The album was released in Japan, Germany, and across Europe, making it a truly international project. Decades later, it still feels ahead of its time.

実験音楽風なのは良くあるが、謎が解けないことと身体に馴染むことが両立し、長年に渡り繰り返し聴ける音楽は少ない。つまり名盤。

The second side could not be more influenced by Stockhausen's TELEMUSIK (1966).
