Cheer Me Up by The Globetrotters: A Little Slice of 1970s Greek Sunshine Let’s talk about Cheer Me Up, the quirky children’s album from The Globetrotters that popped out of Greece way back in 1970. Released under RCA Victor, this record feels like a warm hug wrapped in vinyl—scratchy but full of heart. It’s not gonna win any Grammys (they didn’t even exist for kids’ music back then), but man, it’s got charm. And you know what? Charm counts. The title track, “Cheer Me Up,” is one of those songs that kinda sneaks up on ya. At first listen, it’s just this bouncy little tune with handclaps and an innocent vibe, right? But then it sticks to your brain like syrup on pancakes. You find yourself humming it while folding laundry or waiting in line at the post office. There’s something so pure about how unpolished it feels—it doesn’t try too hard to impress anyone. Just a bunch of grown-ups making music for kids who probably thought it was the coolest thing ever. Honestly, I can almost picture some little Greek kid spinning this in their living room, dancing around like nobody’s watching. Then there’s “Gravy.” Yeah, that gravy. Who names a song after gravy?! Only someone who knows how to make ordinary things magical, apparently. This track has these wonky sound effects—like pots clanging and spoons tapping—and somehow it works. Like, why does it work?! Maybe because it reminds me of family dinners where everything felt chaotic yet perfect. Or maybe it’s just plain weird enough to be unforgettable. Either way, “Gravy” isn’t trying to teach kids anything deep; it’s just fun. Pure, silly fun. What gets me most about this album is how simple everything is. No flashy production tricks, no autotune, no big marketing push. Just a group of people putting together songs they hoped would make kids smile. In today’s world of hyper-curated playlists and TikTok hits, Cheer Me Up feels refreshingly… human. Oh, and here’s the kicker—I bet The Globetrotters had no idea their little project would still be talked about decades later. Kinda makes you wonder if they’d laugh or cringe hearing us gush over tracks like “Gravy.” Anyway, next time life feels heavy, throw this album on. Let its scrappy cheerfulness remind you that sometimes, all we need is a bit of joy served up with zero pretense.
