Album Review: July by God’s Eye Released in 1992 under the UK-based label 20/20 Recordings, July by God’s Eye is an intriguing entry into the Indie Rock scene. It’s not your typical glossy rock record but rather a raw, unfiltered journey through emotion and sound. The album, produced and engineered by Paul Q. Kolderie (who also mastered it alongside Mike), feels like a labor of love with its stripped-down approach. And let’s not forget that cover art—courtesy of K. Tarnowski—which perfectly sets the tone for what lies within: something understated yet deeply resonant. Tracks like “On My Own” and “The Letter” stand out as moments where the band truly shines. In “On My Own,” S. Smith’s songwriting takes center stage, offering lyrics that are both introspective and hauntingly relatable. You can almost feel the isolation in the melody, which builds slowly until it crashes over you like waves. Meanwhile, “The Letter” delivers a punchier vibe, blending sharp guitar riffs with a rhythm section that refuses to sit still. These two songs stick with you because they’re honest—they don’t try too hard to impress, instead letting their imperfections add character. One thing worth noting is how cohesive this album feels despite its varied moods. Whether it’s the bright energy of “Bright” or the brooding intensity of “Bullet,” there’s a sense that these tracks belong together. It’s clear Joyce Linehan’s management played a role in keeping things tight, ensuring that every detail—from writing to mastering—felt intentional. Reflecting on July, it strikes me as one of those albums that might slip under the radar at first glance. But give it time, and it burrows into your brain. Listening to it now, decades later, I’m struck by how fresh it still sounds. Sure, some parts feel a bit rough around the edges, but isn’t that what makes indie rock so appealing? It’s real, messy, human. And here’s the kicker: while most bands from the early ‘90s tried to chase trends, God’s Eye seemed content doing their own thing. That kind of confidence doesn’t come around often—and when it does, you remember it.
