Otis Redding - Ive Been Loving You Too Long

Review by Karen Colebeck

Otis Redding’s I’ve Been Loving You Too Long: A Soulful Masterpiece That Still Hits Hard Let’s get one thing straight—Otis Redding wasn’t just making music; he was pouring his soul into a bottle and handing it to you with a wink. Released in 1970 (yeah, five years after his tragic death), I’ve Been Loving You Too Long is the kind of album that makes you want to cry, dance, and call your ex all at once. It’s got everything: raw emotion, funky grooves, deep soul vibes, and enough grit to make Southern biscuits jealous. The genres? Rock, R&B, Funk/Soul. Styles? Soul, Rhythm & Blues, Southern Soul, Deep Soul—you name it. This record doesn’t fit neatly into boxes because, let’s face it, Otis didn’t care about labels beyond Atlantic or ATCO Records. And can we talk about how this baby dropped everywhere from the UK to Canada, France to Europe? Global domination much? Now, let’s dive into two standout tracks that’ll stick in your head like gum on a hot sidewalk. Track 1: "I’ve Been Loving You Too Long" This song is basically relationship goals wrapped up in heartbreak. The title track kicks things off with Otis laying it all out there—his voice cracks, growls, and soars like he’s lived every second of those lyrics. When he belts, “I’ve been loving you too long to stop now,” you believe him. Like, really believe him. It’s not just some cheesy love declaration; it’s a desperate plea, a promise, and a warning rolled into one. You remember this track because it feels personal—as if Otis himself showed up at your door with flowers and tears streaming down his face. Plus, the horn section hits harder than my uncle’s BBQ ribs. Honestly, if this song doesn’t give you goosebumps, check your pulse. Track 2: "Try A Little Tenderness" If “Tenderness” doesn’t make you weak in the knees, then congratulations—you’re probably an alien. This tune starts slow and sultry, building into a crescendo that could wake the dead (or at least shake them outta their graves). Otis takes what could’ve been a sappy ballad and turns it into a sermon about empathy and understanding. By the time the backing vocals kick in with that gospel-inspired fervor, you’re ready to join a choir—or start hugging strangers on the street. Why does this track stick? Because it reminds us humans are messy, complicated beings who sometimes need a little grace. Also, try listening to it without swaying—it’s impossible. --- Other gems on the album include bangers like “Respect” (you know, the one Aretha Franklin turned into gold) and “Satisfaction,” which proves Otis could cover The Stones and still sound cooler than Mick Jagger on a good day. Oh, and shoutout to whoever handled photography—props for capturing Otis looking effortlessly fly. So here’s the kicker: I’ve Been Loving You Too Long isn’t just an album; it’s a vibe, a feeling, a late-night conversation over cigarettes and coffee. Listening to it feels like stepping back in time when music came straight from the gut, no filters applied. If you haven’t heard it yet, do yourself a favor and press play. Just don’t blame me when you find yourself crying in the shower while belting out “These Arms of Mine.” Final thought? Otis Redding may have left us way too soon, but damn, did he leave behind a legacy that keeps giving. Now excuse me while I go blast “Shake” and attempt to channel my inner soul diva. Spoiler alert: It won’t be pretty—but hey, neither was life in 1970.

The Immortal Otis Redding..
I love Otis Redding's music. The man and his music. "Respect" is another Finger-popping, Hand-clapping, Foot-stomping and Soul-stirring song. When you hear his soulful and upbeat music, you cannot just sit and listen to the lyrics. His music is electrifying. His music makes you move. A legend in his own time. Still a legend today.....
