Album Review: Communication by Ipso Facto (1986) If you’re a fan of Roots Reggae with that laid-back, soul-soothing vibe, Communication by Ipso Facto is one to check out. Released in 1986 via Pendulum Productions, this US-born gem doesn’t try too hard—it’s just straight-up good music for when you need something real in your ears. The album feels like hanging out on a porch while the world slows down, and it’s got some killer tracks that stick with ya. Let me tell ya about two standouts. First up, “No Cocaine.” Yeah, I know, the title kinda says it all, but it’s not preachy or boring. It’s more like a smooth warning wrapped in a groove that makes you nod along even as Wain McFarlane drops wisdom through his vocals. You can feel the basslines—courtesy of Juju McFarlane—rumbling deep in your chest, grounding the message without being overbearing. And those keys from Rafael Bejarano? They add this dreamy layer that keeps pulling you back in. Honestly, every time I hear it, I think, "Man, they really nailed this one." Then there’s “Walk On By,” which hits different. This track has this breezy, almost carefree vibe, but don’t let that fool ya—it’s packed with emotion. The saxophone work by Craig Markham gives it this jazzy twist that sneaks up on you, making it impossible not to replay. There’s also something magical about how everything blends together—the percussion, the steady drums from Julitta McFarlane, and the overall flow. It’s like taking a walk at sunset; it feels right, even if you don’t quite know why. One thing worth mentioning is how tight-knit the crew behind this album seems. With so many McFarlanes involved (seriously, what’s the deal with that?!), it’s clear they brought their A-game. Kudos to Cathy Wilson for the art direction, too—it ties the whole package together nicely. Oh, and props to engineer John Hurst for keeping things crisp where it counts. So yeah, Communication might’ve come out in ’86, but it still holds up today. Listening to it feels like finding an old vinyl record at a thrift shop—it’s got charm, grit, and heart. Honestly, though, after diving into these tracks, I’m left wondering: did anyone ever figure out if Julitta McFarlane was related to half the band? Either way, hats off to Ipso Facto for creating something that sticks around longer than most memories do. Peace out.
