Zombie Bar B Q by La Sect Rouge: A Raw Garage Rock Gem from Down Under Alright, let’s talk about Zombie Bar B Q, the 1987 garage rock nugget from Australia’s own La Sect Rouge. Released on Big Home Productions, this album is like that scrappy friend who shows up uninvited but ends up being the life of the party. It’s messy, loud, and full of attitude—just how garage rock should be. First off, you gotta hand it to A.C. Pavey. The guy’s pulling triple duty here—writing, singing, and shredding guitar like his life depends on it. And honestly? That’s probably what makes this record feel so alive. With Chris Perish laying down some serious bass grooves, Adam Rock smashing the drums like he’s got a personal vendetta against them, and Sarah adding rhythm guitar and backing vocals, this band feels tight even when they’re going full chaos. Oh, and can we just take a sec to appreciate the artwork? Yeah, La Sect Rouge did that too. Gotta love a band that handles their own visuals—it gives the whole thing an authentic DIY vibe. Now, onto the tracks. While the whole album has its moments, two songs really stuck with me: “Ballad Of Matt Talbot” and the title track “Zombie Bar-B-Q.” “Ballad Of Matt Talbot” hits different because it’s not your typical high-octane banger. Instead, it’s got this brooding, almost haunting energy. Pavey’s vocals sound raw, like he’s telling you a story over a campfire while everyone else is passed out drunk around him. There’s something oddly cinematic about it—you find yourself wondering who Matt Talbot even is and why his tale deserves a ballad. Spoiler alert: I still don’t know, but I keep coming back for more anyway. Then there’s “Zombie Bar-B-Q,” which is exactly as wild as it sounds. This one’s pure fun. Imagine if zombies crashed a backyard barbecue—chaotic, greasy, and slightly dangerous. The riff is catchy as hell, and Sarah’s backing vocals add just enough grit to make it unforgettable. You can practically smell the burnt sausages and hear the undead moaning in the background (or maybe that’s just me). Either way, it’s impossible not to crank this one up and air-guitar like a maniac. The third standout mention goes to “Jimmy’s Mop.” Don’t ask me why—I have no clue what a mop has to do with anything—but the song slaps. Maybe it’s the absurdity of it all. Who writes a tune about cleaning supplies? La Sect Rouge does, apparently. And somehow, it works. What’s wild about Zombie Bar B Q is how effortlessly it captures the spirit of late ‘80s Australian underground rock. It doesn’t try too hard to impress; instead, it lets the music speak for itself. Sure, it’s rough around the edges, but that’s kinda the point. In a world where everything feels polished to death, hearing something this unapologetically real is refreshing. So yeah, give Zombie Bar B Q a spin if you’re into garage rock that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Just don’t blame me if you end up craving BBQ or wondering about zombie hygiene afterward. Honestly, isn’t that what great music’s supposed to do—make you think weird thoughts?

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a fun fact: The 1987 Australian garage rock album *Zombie Bar B Q* by La Sect Rouge is a DIY gem. Every track, from "Ballad Of Matt Talbot" to "Jimmy's Mop," was written by A. C. Pavey, who also handled vocals and guitar duties. Even cooler? The band took full creative control—La Sect Rouge itself designed the artwork. With Sarah adding backing vocals and rhythm guitar, and Chris Perish on bass, this tight-knit group brought raw energy to life under their indie label, Big Home Productions. It’s a true snapshot of underground Aussie rock in the '80s.

Hey I played second guitar on that, we were rough but rowdy and had a lot of fun, I also sang on The Ballad of Mathew Talbot, still got old rehearsal tapes with Tony and me arguing (as usual) ha ha. He was a funny bugger, he used to make me laugh my guts out, but I also wanted to slap him at times, it was like a sibling rivalry type of thing. He was a kinda of Tom Waits punk/blues original - they broke the mould after him. Around December every year I think of him....sad
