Review by Brenda Matos

Cyberpunisher by Hypnoskull: A Brutal Blast from the Past Let’s get one thing straight—this ain’t your grandma’s chill-out record. Hypnoskull’s Cyberpunisher is a relentless, skull-crushing ride through experimental electronic chaos that’ll leave you questioning if reality just glitched out on ya. Released in 1994 under Ha-Releases (props to them for taking the risk), this Dutch industrial beast hits hard like a malfunctioning android with an attitude problem. Tracks like "Hypnohead" and "Scrap Metal Massaker" stick in your brain like shrapnel—painful but unforgettable. First up, “Hypnohead.” Holy crap, does it slap. It opens with these cold, mechanical beats that feel like they’re drilling into your frontal lobe. Then BAM—it drops into this hypnotic, repetitive loop that’s part dancefloor banger, part dystopian nightmare fuel. You can almost picture some shadowy figure lurking in neon-lit alleyways while this track pulses in the background. The way it builds tension without ever fully letting go? Pure genius. Or maybe pure madness. Either way, it works. Then there’s “Scrap Metal Massaker,” which sounds exactly how its title implies—a chaotic warzone of clanging metal and distorted synths. This track doesn’t mess around; it grabs you by the throat and drags you through ten kinds of hell. There’s no melody here, just raw aggression wrapped in layers of noise. And yet…you can’t stop listening. It’s like watching a car crash—you know you should look away, but something keeps pulling you back for more punishment. The rest of the album follows suit, delivering tracks like “Final Collaps Of Reistors” (yeah, typos included) and “Sector Death,” each one nastier than the last. Even slower cuts like “Last Breath” manage to suffocate you with their oppressive atmospheres. Hypnoskull clearly didn’t give a damn about making music easy to digest—he wanted to challenge listeners, piss ‘em off even. Respect. Here’s the kicker though—why does an album this abrasive still resonate decades later? Maybe because we’re living in the cyberpunk hellscape it predicted. Or maybe because sometimes, art doesn’t need to be pretty or polished—it just needs to hit hard enough to make you feel alive. So yeah, Cyberpunisher isn’t for everyone. If you’re looking for sunshine and rainbows, go somewhere else. But if you wanna dive headfirst into a digital abyss where humanity’s last breath echoes against twisted steel walls, crank this sucker up. Just don’t blame me when your neighbors call the cops. Oh, and one final thought—what kind of person names themselves Hypnoskull anyway? Sounds like a rejected villain from a low-budget sci-fi flick. Love it.

About Hypnoskull

Hypnoskull emerged as a project of Patrick Stevens in 1992, who combines the power of pure analog electronics with harsh rhythm structures to form an anarchic assault of noise and techno-industrial. After years of underground activism in the worldwide electronic underground network of industrial music, Hypnoskull reached a larger audience by putting out the album 'Rythmusmaschine 1-2' (1998), followed by 'Ffwd>Burnout!'(1999) and 'Electronic Music Means War To Us' (2001). Before that, Stevens also made a name as one half of the duo Sonar, a hardcore Belgian rhythmical industrial project. He also works with miss Mieke M. (Tunnel), and with Raoul Roucka (Noisex) under the name 'Cybernetic:Fuckheadz'. His solo projects like Sona Eact®, Reset, Sliding Elements, Trivial Gender and 33MHz are released on various labels all around the globe.
