IRM Crew’s Baseball: A Raw Slice of 1987 Hip Hop Magic Alright, let’s talk about IRM Crew’s Baseball, the kinda album that sneaks up on you and sticks around like an old friend. Released in ’87 under Cchill Records, this rap and hip-hop gem is unapologetically raw—like a boombox blasting on a summer block party corner. The whole thing’s got grit, heart, and just enough funk to make it unforgettable. Now, I’m not gonna lie: when I first heard this album, I wasn’t sure what to expect. It’s not polished or shiny like some of the stuff we’re used to these days. But man, does it have character. Two tracks stand out for me, and honestly, they’re the reason I keep coming back to Baseball. First up, “I Dream of D.J.’s.” This one hits different. It’s got this hypnotic beat that feels like late-night radio vibes mixed with dreams of spinning records in a basement somewhere. The lyrics are simple but stick with you, kinda like those random thoughts you can’t shake off after a long day. There’s something nostalgic about how the track builds—it’s not flashy, but it pulls you in. You can almost picture the crew huddled in the studio, vibing off each other’s energy. That’s the magic right there. Then there’s “Diseased Amerika,” which slaps harder than you’d think for a track from the ‘80s. It’s sharp, edgy, and packs a punch without trying too hard. The way IRM Crew tackles social issues here feels real, no sugarcoating or preaching. Just straight-up truth over a head-nodding beat. When Brett Edgar and Carl White produced this joint, they must’ve known they were onto something special. Every time I hear it, I’m reminded of how music can be both fun and thought-provoking at the same time. Ain’t that wild? The rest of the album holds its own too. Tracks like “Let’s Dance” bring the heat if you’re looking for something more upbeat, while “Uh, Baby” has this cheeky charm that makes you wanna smirk. Shoutout to Charlie Erickson and William Harris for engineering this beast—they made sure every sound landed right where it needed to. Looking back, Baseball might not get the props it deserves compared to bigger names from the era, but it’s exactly that kind of hidden treasure that reminds us why we dig through crates (or Spotify playlists). Executive producer Charles C. Lockhart clearly trusted the team to do their thing, and boy, did they deliver. Here’s the kicker though—listening to Baseball now feels like stepping into a time capsule. Not because it sounds dated, but because it captures a moment when hip-hop was still figuring itself out, experimenting, and breaking rules. And honestly? That’s kinda beautiful. So next time you’re scrolling for new tunes, give IRM Crew a shot. Who knows? You might find yourself dreaming of D.J.’s or nodding along to “Diseased Amerika” like I did. Or maybe you’ll just realize how much cooler music used to be before everyone started taking themselves so seriously. Peace out.
