Dengue Fever - Cannibal Courtship

Cannibal Courtship by Dengue Fever: A Wild, Genre-Bending Ride You Didn’t Know You Needed Let’s get one thing straight—Dengue Fever isn’t your average band. Their 2011 album Cannibal Courtship is like that quirky friend who shows up to a party wearing something totally unexpected but somehow pulls it off with style. Blending Cambodian classical vibes, indie rock grit, and world music textures, this record feels like taking a trip around the globe without leaving your couch. And trust me, you’ll want to stay seated for this wild ride. The album kicks off with “Durian Dowry,” and holy cow, does it set the tone. The track starts with this hypnotic guitar riff that feels like walking into a smoky bar in Phnom Penh. Then Chhom Nimol (the lead vocalist) comes in, her voice smooth as silk but packing enough punch to knock you back. It’s got this playful energy, like they’re daring you to figure out what genre it even belongs to. Is it pop? Rock? Cambodian folk? Honestly, who cares—it works. By the time the brass section kicks in, you’re already hooked. This song sticks with me because it’s impossible not to move to it. Seriously, try sitting still while listening—it can’t be done. Then there’s “Sister In The Radio,” which hits different. It’s slower, moodier, almost dreamlike. The harmonies from The Living Sisters add this ethereal layer that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled into some secret ritual. There’s a rawness to the lyrics too, like a letter written late at night when no one’s watching. I remember this track because it feels personal, like eavesdropping on someone else’s thoughts. Plus, the way the percussion subtly builds throughout gives it this cinematic vibe—you can practically see the scene unfolding in your head. What really stands out about Cannibal Courtship is how fearless it feels. These guys aren’t afraid to throw everything into the mix—brass, woodwinds, traditional Cambodian instruments—and let it all simmer together. Sure, sometimes it gets a little messy, but isn’t that part of the charm? Tracks like “Genjer Genjer” and “Kiss Of The Bufo Alvarius” keep things unpredictable, veering between psychedelic freakouts and haunting ballads. Even when it doesn’t quite land, you’ve gotta respect the ambition. Oh, and props to the production team here—Paul Dreux Smith on drums and mixing duties deserves a shout-out. The sound is crisp without being over-polished, letting each instrument breathe. Same goes for the mastering by Paul Blakemore; nothing gets lost in the chaos, which is saying something given how much is going on. So yeah, Cannibal Courtship might not be everyone’s cup of tea. If you’re looking for cookie-cutter indie rock or straight-up pop, this probably ain’t it. But if you’re down to explore something weird, wonderful, and kinda hard to describe, give it a spin. Honestly, I think Dengue Fever could’ve called this album We Made This While Eating Pineapple Pizza and I’d still love it. That’s how good it is. Final thought: Listening to this album feels like finding an old map in your attic and realizing it leads somewhere amazing. Just don’t blame me if you end up booking a flight to Cambodia after hearing it.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The album *Cannibal Courtship* by Dengue Fever blends indie rock with traditional Cambodian music. It’s like a musical time machine, mixing 1960s Cambodian sounds with modern indie vibes. The band even features a track called "Genjer Genjer," which is based on a classic Indonesian folk song. How wild is that? It’s not every day you hear Southeast Asian traditions mashed up with alternative rock. Definitely worth a listen!

OH so lovely, just cant get rid of the Fever, need help right now !! anyone ??
This is the saddest song I ever heard and I have no idea what's she's saying. I read an article where she said that the song is about how she and her mom thought her sister was killed in the Cambodian genocide but then they heard the sister singing on the radio (Sister in the Radio) and they knew she was alive. So maybe it is a happy ending story but it sure sounds sad!

@13bilbo-from my understanding before the band was form, one of the original member caught dengue fever when he was visiting cambodia. it was the trip that inspire them to form the band.

I'm curious about why inspired the name of the band? Dengue Fever is a virus i have been watching. UK government even has a gemetically modified mosquito breed to fight this. good song :) probably wild fire band name too!
