Album Review: "I Won't Cry" by Tony Daniels – A Soulful Gem from 1966 Alright, let’s get into it. I Won’t Cry by Tony Daniels is one of those albums that sneaks up on you like a cat in socks. Released way back in ’66 (yeah, the same year Batman fought Mr. Freeze on TV), this funky soul masterpiece hails from the US and comes courtesy of Beval Records. And while its title might suggest some serious emotional repression, trust me, this record feels anything but bottled-up. First off, can we talk about how smooth this guy is? Tony Daniels doesn’t just sing—he pours his heart out like he's buttering toast at Sunday brunch. The album kicks off with the titular track, “I Won’t Cry,” which immediately grabs your attention because… well, who doesn’t love a good self-contradictory anthem? Spoiler alert: dude totally cries by the end. But hey, isn’t that what soul music’s all about? Overcoming pain through killer melodies and raw vocals? Props to Storball and Bennett for penning such an earworm—it’s got hooks sharp enough to catch a marlin. Then there’s “Drip Drop,” which sounds exactly like what happens when you leave a leaky faucet running overnight. No, seriously, this track is dripping with groove. It's impossible not to bob your head or tap your foot here; it’s infectious as catching a cold from your nephew during flu season. Matthews deserves a shout-out for co-writing this banger—it’s pure gold. If I had a time machine, I’d go back to ‘66 just to see people dancing to this jam in bell-bottoms and paisley shirts. Probably looking cooler than any of us ever will. What makes these tracks stick? Simplicity, baby. There’s no overproduction, no fancy tricks—just honest-to-goodness soul vibes that hit harder than your grandma’s meatloaf. You feel every note, every lyric, like Tony himself is standing right next to you, whispering secrets only you understand. Reflecting on I Won’t Cry, it strikes me how timeless this stuff really is. Sure, it came out decades ago, but drop this needle today, and suddenly everyone in the room starts vibin’. Maybe it’s the nostalgia talking—or maybe soul music truly is eternal. Either way, listening to this album feels like finding $20 in an old jacket pocket: unexpected, delightful, and kinda makes you wonder why everything else ain’t this satisfying. Oh, and fun fact—the label info says “Beval, beval.” Was someone falling asleep while typing? Or was it intentional poetry? We’ll never know. But honestly, after hearing this album, I don’t even care.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The 1966 soul album *I Won’t Cry* by Tony Daniels is a hidden gem in the funk and soul world. It was released on the Beval label in the US, and get this—it only has two tracks, "I Won’t Cry" and "Drip Drop," each with slightly different titles on the A-side and B-side. The songs were written by Storball and Bennett for one track, and Matthews for the other. Back in the day, this kind of simplicity was pure magic. Soul music fans still hunt it down for its raw, emotional vibe.

1966 release on this small Detroit label. Tony Daniels who was also known as Reggie La Mont (check "How Lonely") was part of the Fabulous Apollos group.

Anyone now who the group is on this? I assume Storball in the writers credit is Donald Sorball from The Capitols, but the group doesn't sound like The Capitols.
