Hell Fix It If You Don’t Go: A Raw Slice of Gospel Funk from 1959 Alright, let’s cut to the chase. Edna Gallmon Cooke wasn’t just singing—she was testifying. Her 1959 album Hell Fix It If You Don’t Go is a no-nonsense punch of gospel grit with enough funk and soul to knock your socks off. Released on Nashboro Records in the US, this record doesn’t mess around. It’s raw, it’s real, and it hits like a freight train. First up, the title track, “He’ll Fix It.” Oh man, this one grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go. Cooke belts out these lyrics like her life depends on it, and honestly? Maybe it did. The groove here ain’t slick or polished—it’s dirty, it’s alive, and it makes you wanna move even if you’re sitting down. That Hammond organ? Smokin’. The choir backing her up? On fire. This song sticks with me because it’s got that gut-level urgency, like she’s pleading for your soul while also daring you to doubt her conviction. When she sings about fixing what’s broken, you better believe she means business. Then there’s “If You Don’t Go,” which flips the vibe but keeps the intensity cranked. This tune feels more personal, almost like Cooke is talking directly to you. She lays it all out—no frills, no fluff—and somehow manages to sound both tender and fierce at the same time. The call-and-response between her voice and the band gives me chills every damn time. It’s not just music; it’s a sermon wrapped in rhythm and blues. You can tell everyone involved poured their hearts into this, and it shows. What gets me most about this album is how unapologetically human it feels. There are moments where the recording quality dips, sure, but who cares? That imperfection adds character, like hearing the cracks in an old church wall that tell its story. Cooke wasn’t aiming for perfection—she was aiming for truth, and holy hell, does she deliver. Now here’s the kicker: listening to this album today feels kinda revolutionary. In a world full of auto-tune and overproduced nonsense, Hell Fix It If You Don’t Go reminds us why we turn to music in the first place—to feel something. So yeah, crank this bad boy loud, let it rattle your bones, and don’t be surprised if you find yourself shouting “Amen!” before it’s over. And hey—if nothing else, it’s proof that some things never go outta style, like raw talent and pure heart.

Thank you LORD, for letting us, enjoy this spiritual Voice. Through out my life I hear Mrs. Cooke's voice, from a child my mother would play her lLP's. It's in my spirit, and every now and then, I hear her singing. I have to go and play her songs until my soul if full.
