The Mad Are Sane - Reality LP

Review by Ea Ditlev

Reality LP by The Mad Are Sane: A Punk Rock Punch to the Face Alright, buckle up, folks. If you’re here for some sugar-coated praise, this ain’t it. Reality LP by The Mad Are Sane is a raw, gritty slab of UK punk rock that feels like getting elbowed in the ribs at a dingy pub gig—and loving every second of it. Released in 2007 on Abused Records and Fear Of War Records (yeah, those names say it all), this album doesn’t mess around. It’s loud, unapologetic, and dripping with attitude. And honestly? That’s exactly what makes it so damn memorable. First off, let’s talk tracks. “World In Action” kicks things off with a riff sharp enough to slice through your headphones. Guitarists Ash Cope and Phil Buchmeier go full throttle here, while Jo Common’s vocals snarl like a pissed-off alley cat. The lyrics tackle societal chaos with just the right mix of cynicism and wit—basically, if you’ve ever wanted to scream into the void about how messed up everything is, this song gets you. Dave Bellamy’s bassline slithers underneath like a snake ready to strike, tying it all together. This one sticks because it’s not just noise; it’s got teeth. Then there’s “Animal Crimes,” which hits harder than an overcooked steak. Drums from Martin Common thunder along like a runaway train, and the whole thing builds into a chaotic crescendo that leaves you breathless. There’s something about the way they weave anger and melody here—it’s catchy as hell but still feels dangerous, like dancing barefoot on broken glass. You won’t forget this track anytime soon, trust me. What really sells Reality LP, though, is its authenticity. These guys aren’t trying to reinvent the wheel—they’re just smashing it to pieces and laughing while they do it. Producer creds go to the band themselves, which explains why it sounds so gloriously unhinged. Gary Jones on engineering keeps things tight without losing that rough-around-the-edges charm. And hats off to Mark Hardyman for the cover art—it’s simple, striking, and fits the vibe perfectly. Andy Nazer’s tech wizardry ensures nothing gets lost in the sonic mayhem. By the time you hit closer “Un-Natural Burial,” you might feel like you’ve been through the wringer—but in the best possible way. It’s cathartic, messy, and utterly human. So, would I recommend Reality LP? Absolutely—if you’re into punk rock that doesn’t take itself too seriously but still packs a punch. Just don’t expect polish or perfection. What you get instead is raw energy, killer riffs, and a reminder that sometimes, imperfection is where the magic happens. Final thought: Listening to this album feels like finding a crumpled flyer for a secret show taped to a lamppost—it’s scrappy, unexpected, and leaves you wanting more. Now excuse me while I dig out my old Doc Martens and stomp around the room yelling “World In Action” at the top of my lungs. Cheers, lads.
