Les Fleurs Bleues 2002 by Stefano Bollani: A Jazz Odyssey That’s Kinda Hard to Forget Alright, let’s talk about Les Fleurs Bleues 2002, Stefano Bollani’s groovy little gem that somehow got released in 2016 (yeah, time travel might be involved). This Contemporary Jazz album from France is like sipping espresso at midnight—smooth, edgy, and leaves you buzzing. Backed by Label Bleu, it brings together some serious talent: Scott Colley on contrabass, Clarence Penn smashing drums, and of course, Bollani himself tickling those piano keys with finesse. The cover art? A trippy mix of Lorenzo Montagni’s painting and Jérôme Witz’s design—think abstract flowers melting into jazz vibes. And props to Philippe Teissier Du Cros for handling recording, mixing, AND mastering. Dude must’ve been locked in the studio for weeks fuelled purely on croissants and ambition. Now, onto the tracks. There are eight beauties here, but two stuck out like sore thumbs—or maybe happy ones? First up, “Chippie.” Oh man, this one hits different. It starts off all coy, like your cat pretending not to care about you, then BAM—it explodes into a whirlwind of notes. Bollani’s piano work feels like he’s having an animated conversation with himself while Scott Colley’s bass hums along like a wise old uncle chiming in occasionally. The whole thing has this playful energy, making you want to dance awkwardly in your kitchen. You know, the kind where you spill coffee everywhere but don’t even care because life is too short for boring music. Then there’s “It Could Happen To Queneau”, which sounds like what would happen if Raymond Queneau (the literary genius) decided to write poetry using only saxophones and drumsticks. Wait, no saxophone here—but still, the rhythm section is tight enough to make you forget that fact. Clarence Penn’s drumming adds these sneaky little flourishes that keep things unpredictable. Honestly, I played this track three times in a row before realizing I hadn’t moved from my chair. Oops. Sure, the rest of the album is solid gold too—tracks like “L’Histoire Qui Avance” have a cinematic quality that makes you feel like you’re walking through Parisian streets under soft rain. But hey, focusing on everything would take away from the charm of discovery, right? So yeah, Les Fleurs Bleues 2002 isn’t just another jazz record; it’s more like a sonic postcard from Bollani saying, “Hey, remember how awesome imperfection can sound?” By the end of it, you’ll find yourself humming random bits and wondering why contemporary jazz doesn’t get invited to more parties. Oh, and fun fact: If this album were a person, it’d probably wear mismatched socks and quote obscure French philosophers at dinner parties. Which, honestly, we need more of in our playlists.
