Drone Forest’s Drone Forest: A Sonic Journey Worth Getting Lost In If you’re into electronic music that pushes boundaries, Drone Forest by Drone Forest is one of those albums that’ll stick with you. Released in 2003 on Vuzh Music (a US-based label), this experimental gem dives headfirst into noise, ambient, and drone territory. It’s not for everyone—some tracks might sound like your washing machine having an existential crisis—but if you’re up for something weird and wonderful, it’s a wild ride. The album was arranged by Ian C Stewart and features soundscapes crafted by Dave Stafford. Tracks like “Bminima” and “Mineral” are the ones I keep coming back to. Let me tell ya why. “Bminima” hits you right away with its hypnotic loops and eerie textures. It’s minimalist but packs a punch—you can almost picture yourself wandering through a dark forest where every rustle feels louder than it should. The track builds slowly, layering sounds until you’re fully immersed. By the end, you’re not sure if you’ve been listening for five minutes or fifty. That’s the magic of it—it messes with your sense of time. Then there’s “Mineral,” which is just… different. It starts off subtle, almost meditative, but then these low-frequency drones creep in, vibrating in a way that makes your chest feel heavy. It’s like standing too close to a speaker at a show—except this time, it’s intentional. You don’t just hear “Mineral”; you feel it. It’s haunting, beautiful, and kinda unsettling all at once. Other tracks like “A Minimal Animal” and “Thod Of Gunder” also bring their own vibes to the table, though they didn’t grab me as much as the two I mentioned. Still, they add depth to the overall experience. This isn’t background music—it demands your attention. What strikes me most about Drone Forest is how unapologetically raw it feels. There’s no sugarcoating here, no attempt to smooth out the rough edges. And honestly? That’s refreshing. It’s like the creators said, “Here’s what we made—take it or leave it.” Spoiler alert: I took it. If you’re looking for something polished and predictable, this ain’t it. But if you want to explore the stranger side of electronic music, give Drone Forest a shot. Just don’t blame me if it messes with your brain a little. Oh, and here’s a random thought—listening to this album feels like staring at clouds while lying on the ground. At first, you think you see shapes, but then everything blurs together, and suddenly, you’re not even sure what you’re looking at anymore. Weird, huh?

About Drone Forest

Artistic collective creating gritty ambient and quietnoise music. Drone Forest utilizes the internet to trade sound sources, which are assembled by the group into drone based soundscapes. With a few notable exceptions, each of Drone Forest's full-length releases are assembled by a single member of the collective, using sound sources recorded by the group. Thus the character of the group is relayed via an individual expression. Since the band is separated by great distance, audio source files are exchanged over the internet, each member's own sound studio used to manipulate and arrange the sounds toward a common set of ideals. The Drone Forest project was initiated by Ian C. Stewart in the year 2002 when he requested electronic audio files from Michael J. Bowman, C. Reider and Davie Blint. Mr. Stewart then used these files to create several long pieces of experimental music, which he set to a videotape of stark Winter trees. In the Spring of 2003, Drone Forest became active as a collaborative effort. n
