Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation - Remains To Be Heard

Review by Jorge Alvarez Moreno

Album Review: "Remains To Be Heard" by Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation If you're a fan of raw, blues-driven rock with a progressive edge, Remains To Be Heard (2005) is one of those albums that sneaks up on you. Released under several labels like Not Bad Records and Sonet, this record brings together the grit of electric blues, the punch of blues-rock, and the sprawling ambition of prog rock. It’s not perfect—there are moments where it feels like the band is still figuring itself out—but when it clicks, oh man, does it ever. The album kicks off strong with "Cobwebs," which instantly grabs your attention. The track opens with Jon Moorshead's raspy vocals paired against Victor Brox’s haunting organ work. You can almost picture cobwebs stretching across an old attic as the lyrics weave through themes of stagnation and regret. What makes this tune stick in my head? It’s how Aynsley Dunbar lays down his drumming—it’s tight but loose enough to let the groove breathe. And then there’s that killer guitar solo from John Moorshead; it’s fiery without being over-the-top, leaving just enough room for the listener to sit back and soak it all in. Another standout is "Blood On Your Wheels." This one hits hard right from the start, blending heavy riffs with a dark lyrical undertone. The basslines from Alex Dmochowski rumble beneath the surface, giving the whole thing a menacing vibe. Lyrically, it’s cryptic yet vivid, painting images of chaos and consequence. Honestly, I find myself humming its main riff days later—it’s infectious in a way that only great rock songs are. What really ties this album together is its production quality. Mastered by Roger Lomas, the sound has a warm, analog feel that suits the material perfectly. Kudos also go to Hipgnosis for the sleeve design—it’s simple but striking, much like the music itself. Now, here’s the kicker: despite its strengths, Remains To Be Heard isn’t some polished masterpiece. Some tracks drag a bit, and the mix occasionally buries key elements. But maybe that’s part of its charm. Listening to it feels like flipping through faded photographs of a forgotten era—an imperfect snapshot of musicians doing what they do best. As Michael Heatley notes in the liner notes, this album is more than just nostalgia; it’s proof that good music doesn’t need bells and whistles to make an impact. So if you’re looking for something real, something unapologetically rooted in the blues but willing to stretch boundaries, give this one a spin. Just don’t expect perfection—expect authenticity. And hey, isn’t that what rock ‘n’ roll’s supposed to be about anyway?

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The album *Remains To Be Heard* by Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation is a hidden gem that blends blues, rock, and progressive elements. It was released in 2005 but features tracks recorded way earlier, giving it a raw, vintage vibe. What’s wild is that the legendary drummer Aynsley Dunbar only played on select tracks, leaving room for other talented musicians like Jon Moorshead and Victor Brox to shine. Oh, and get this—Hipgnosis, the iconic design team behind so many classic album covers, created its sleeve. Not bad for an album that spans genres and decades!

One of the finest drummers I've heard. This record is a respectable effort, and a fine showcase of British-made blues. Notice that these fine musicians are absolutely pragmatic, there is not an unnecessary note, every one counts. This is not a "watch me watch me" band, it is the beauty of "plain and simple".
