Sonic Youth Redd Kross - Superstar Yesterday Once More

Review by John Hartnett

Album Review: Superstar Yesterday Once More by Sonic Youth Redd Kross Released in 1994 under A&M Records, Superstar Yesterday Once More is a curious gem from the Australian rock scene. Blending Pop Rock and Indie Rock styles, this album feels like a time capsule of mid-90s creativity. It’s not perfect, but it’s got that raw charm that makes you hit repeat—sometimes just to figure out what exactly you’re hearing. The standout track here has to be “Yesterday Once More.” Now, don’t get me wrong; it’s not your grandma’s Carpenters cover (thank goodness). This version takes the nostalgic melody and gives it an edgy twist with crunchy guitars and a driving rhythm. The vocals are punchy yet slightly off-kilter, which somehow works. You remember this one because it’s familiar enough to hum along to but different enough to keep you on your toes. It’s like running into an old friend who’s suddenly rocking a mohawk—same person, totally new vibe. Then there’s “Superstar,” which leans more into the Indie Rock side of things. It’s moody, with a brooding bassline that just pulls you in. The lyrics feel cryptic at first listen, almost like they’re daring you to overthink them. But honestly? That’s part of its appeal. There’s something hypnotic about how the song builds up without ever fully exploding—it leaves you hanging, wanting more. Tracks like these stick with you because they make you work for it, ya know? What’s wild about this album is how it straddles genres so effortlessly. One moment you’re vibing to catchy hooks, and the next, you’re lost in experimental layers. Sure, some parts might feel a bit disjointed, but isn’t that kind of the point? It’s messy in all the right ways, like a beautifully imperfect painting. Looking back, Superstar Yesterday Once More feels ahead of its time—or maybe it was just out of sync with the era. Either way, it’s worth revisiting if you’re into music that doesn’t spoon-feed you emotions. And hey, who knew Australia could churn out such a quirky little record? Definitely not me. Guess that’s why we listen—to be surprised.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a fun fact: In 1994, the Australian release of *Superstar Yesterday Once More* by Sonic Youth and Redd Kross brought together two iconic songs—"Yesterday Once More" and "Superstar"—under one rock-infused roof. It’s wild to think these tracks, originally from different eras and styles, got reimagined with a mix of Pop Rock and Indie Rock vibes. Released on A&M Records, this album gave a fresh edge to timeless classics. Not something you’d expect from a project born down under!

The 90’s were awesome because a lot of overlooked bands from The 80’s were resurrected and encouraged to bring their influential originality back to the table : A Real Second Chance for bands like : THE MEAT PUPPETS, THE BUTTHOLE SURFERS,THE ROLLINS BAND,SONIC YOUTH , and RED KROSS .

This is the first version of the song I knew - I was just getting into the Carpenters when If I Were A Carpenter came out, so somehow I got that CD about a year before I got Now & Then. I love both versions equally, amazing cover!
