Album Review: Hauling In The Slack by The Singing Loins Let’s dive into Hauling In The Slack, the quirky 1992 gem from The Singing Loins. This UK-based band blends Folk, World, Country, and Rock with a raw edge that feels like you’ve stumbled into their living room jam session. Released under Hangman Records, this album is an unpolished treasure trove of acoustic vibes, garage rock grit, and folky storytelling. It’s not perfect—heck, it doesn’t even try to be—but that’s what makes it so damn charming. Chris Allen, the ringleader here, wears multiple hats (guitar, accordion, vocals), while Glenn Barnes adds some banjo magic and Chris Broderick keeps things thumping on percussion. Producer Childish clearly let the band do their thing without overthinking it, which gives the record its scrappy, heartfelt charm. Now, onto the tracks. “Hauling In The Slack” kicks things off with a rollicking energy that grabs your attention right away. The mix of banjo plucks and driving guitar riffs feels like a wild ride down a country road. You can almost picture these guys swapping stories over pints in a smoky pub. It’s catchy as hell, but not in a polished pop way—it’s more like something you’d hum absentmindedly while washing dishes. Then there’s “The Card Game,” which sticks out for all the right reasons. It’s slower, moodier, and packed with lyrical depth. Chris Allen’s voice has this raspy sincerity that pulls you in, and the accordion adds a haunting layer you don’t expect at first listen. There’s something about the way it builds tension—you’re waiting for the other shoe to drop, but instead, it leaves you hanging, lost in thought. If I had to pick one track that lingers in my mind long after the needle lifts, this would be it. “Poteen” rounds out the trio I’ll mention briefly—it’s rowdy, chaotic fun. Think drunken singalongs and stomping feet. Not groundbreaking, but man, does it get the job done if you’re looking to cut loose. What strikes me most about Hauling In The Slack is how unapologetically human it feels. These aren’t studio-perfected tracks; they’re snapshots of real people playing music because they love it. And yeah, maybe the production could’ve been cleaner, or the arrangements tighter, but honestly? That’d ruin the vibe. Here’s the kicker—listening to this album made me realize how much we crave authenticity in music today. With AI-generated tunes popping up everywhere, hearing something as genuine and messy as Hauling In The Slack feels kinda revolutionary. So grab a copy if you can find one, pour yourself a drink, and crank it up. Just don’t blame me if your neighbors start wondering why you’re yelling about card games and moonshine.

I remember seeing them do this above an Indian restaurant in Chatham back in the days of the Medway Film Club. They were fine while we watched the Super 8s and a bit of poetry reading but complained when we all started stomping along with the Loins on this!
