Mandalaband - The Eye Of Wendor Prophecies

Review by Norazly Basarian

The Eye Of Wendor Prophecies by Mandalaband: A Symphonic Odyssey That’ll Mess With Your Head (In a Good Way) Let’s get one thing straight—The Eye Of Wendor Prophecies isn’t your average rock album. Released in 1978, this prog-rock behemoth from Mandalaband feels like someone took all the best bits of Lord of the Rings, dumped them into a cauldron with some Mellotrons, and stirred it until unicorns started appearing out of thin air. It’s symphonic, avant-garde, and occasionally so over-the-top that you might need to sit down and recover after listening to it. But damn, is it memorable. First off, kudos to Davy Rohl and his merry band of collaborators for pulling together an insane lineup of musicians. From Jimmy McDonnell shredding electric guitar solos to Maddy Prior belting her lungs out on vocals, this record reads like a who’s who of ‘70s talent. And let’s not forget Gerry Murphy blowing pipes—Northumbrian and Uilleann ones at that! Who even does that anymore? The sheer ambition here is nuts. Nuts but brilliant. Now, onto the tracks. Let me tell ya about “Ride To The City.” This bad boy kicks things off with enough pomp and circumstance to make a medieval king jealous. You’ve got galloping drums, soaring strings (courtesy of the Hallé Orchestra, no less), and a choir that sounds like they’re auditioning for heaven itself. It’s basically the soundtrack to every fantasy movie you wish existed back then. What sticks with me most is how ridiculously cinematic it feels—it’s like riding into battle on horseback while wearing armor made entirely of glitter. Over-the-top? Sure. Unforgettable? Absolutely. Then there’s “Funeral Of The King,” which flips the script entirely. If “Ride To The City” is all bombast and glory, this track brings the somber vibes in spades. Picture this: mournful oboes courtesy of Tony Spath, haunting synths from Woolly Wolstenholme, and vocals dripping with sorrow. By the time Maddy Prior comes in, you’ll swear you can hear actual tears falling somewhere in the mix. It’s heavy stuff—not just musically but emotionally too. Listening to it feels like attending a royal funeral where everyone’s dressed in black velvet and silently judging your life choices. Dark? Yes. Compelling? Also yes. One thing I gotta hand to Mandalaband—they know how to craft atmosphere. Whether it’s the mystical vibes of “Silesandre” or the apocalyptic tension of “The Tempest,” each song pulls you deeper into their weird little world. Even when the album stumbles slightly (looking at you, repetitive track titles), its ambition overshadows any missteps. So what’s the verdict? The Eye Of Wendor Prophecies is a sprawling, chaotic masterpiece that demands your attention—and probably a good cup of tea afterward because holy crap, it’s exhausting. It’s the kind of album you either adore or find completely baffling. Personally, I’m firmly in the “adore” camp. Sure, it’s indulgent as hell, but if you’re gonna indulge, why not do it with bagpipes, choirs, and enough synthesizers to power a small city? Final thought: If Gandalf ever decided to drop an album, it would sound exactly like this. Except maybe with fewer flutes. Okay, maybe.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: *The Eye Of Wendor Prophecies* by Mandalaband, released in 1978, is like a musical epic. It blends Symphonic Rock, Prog Rock, and even Avantgarde styles into one massive concept album. What makes it stand out? The record features members of legendary bands like Barclay James Harvest and 10cc, along with a full choir and orchestral elements like Northumbrian pipes and Mellotron synths. Imagine rock meeting classical grandeur—it’s basically a fantasy novel turned into music.

Breathtaking music.... I bought this album on a second hand fair in Ghent, Belgium by the end of the 70's not knowing the music. Mind blowing stuff to say the least. And look at the names of the musicians.... WAAAUUWW. In the meantime I managed to get hold of all the other albums

Herlig musikk.

Thank you so very much for uploading this fantastic music! I bought this lp more than 30 years ago, and then a few years later a 'friend' borrowed it and never took the trouble to return it. After all those years I still remember every chord, every word, every beat.
