Album Review: Is The Spaner She Want by Sundar Popo Let’s get straight to it—Sundar Popo’s Is The Spaner She Want is a wild ride through the heart of Chutney and Soca music, with a little Reggae sprinkled in for good measure. This album feels like that one friend who shows up at your door uninvited but ends up being the life of the party. It's raw, emotional, and kinda messy—but in the best way possible. First off, let me say this: if you’re looking for something polished and perfect, this ain’t it. But if you want an album that makes you feel alive, then buckle up. Two tracks stuck with me like gum on a hot sidewalk: “Yana Gana Bajai” and the title track, “Is The Spaner She Want.” “Yana Gana Bajai” hits different. Right from the first beat, I could picture myself at some backyard bash in Trinidad, sweating under neon lights while everyone dances like no one’s watching. The rhythm grabs hold of you—it’s impossible not to move. There’s just something about how Sundar Popo delivers those lyrics; they sound so carefree yet full of soul. And can we talk about the Bwia National Indian Orchestra? Their touch adds this lush layer of texture that wraps around you like a warm hug. You don’t even need to understand every word to feel what he’s saying—it’s universal. Then there’s “Is The Spaner She Want,” which is... well, honestly, it’s bizarre as heck. Like, what does “spaner” even mean? Is it a tool? A metaphor? A secret code between lovers? Who knows! But here’s the thing—it works. The mix of humor and boldness in the song catches you off guard. It’s playful, almost teasing, and yet it stays stuck in your head like gum again (seriously, everything about this album sticks). When Harry Mahabir’s arrangements kick in, it elevates the whole vibe into something both chaotic and beautiful. Now, I gotta give props to Mohan Jaikaran for executive producing this gem. He didn’t try to smooth out all the rough edges, and thank God for that. Those imperfections make it real, y’know? It’s like hearing someone pour their heart out without overthinking it. Reflecting on this album, it reminds me of why music matters so much. It’s not always about perfection or fitting neatly into genres. Sometimes, it’s about creating moments that stick with people long after the last note fades. Listening to Is The Spaner She Want felt like stepping into another world—one where rules are bent, emotions run high, and joy wins. And hey, here’s a random thought to leave you with: if Sundar Popo ever decided to turn this album into a cooking show, I’d watch it religiously. Because damn, these songs have flavor.

One of the greatest all time jams. I've always reflected Sundar as the coolie James Brown, the Godfather of chutney....
