Wilco Covered by Various: A Genre-Bending Tribute That Hits Home The 2019 release Wilco Covered by Various is one of those albums that sneaks up on you. It’s not flashy or overly produced, but it has this raw charm that pulls you in. Released under the UK-based label Uncut and falling into genres like Folk, World, Country, and Rock—with a solid Indie Rock vibe—this tribute album feels both nostalgic and refreshingly modern. The tracks are handled by an eclectic mix of artists who clearly have a deep respect for Wilco’s original material, yet they aren’t afraid to put their own spin on things. Let’s get into the meat of it. Two tracks really stuck with me: “Jesus, Etc.” and “Impossible Germany.” First off, “Jesus, Etc.”—you know the song. It’s got that soaring melody and poetic lyrics that make you stop whatever you’re doing and just listen. Whoever took this one on kept the soul of the original intact but added a stripped-down acoustic feel that made it feel intimate, almost like hearing Jeff Tweedy himself play it live in your living room. There’s something about how the guitar work breathes alongside the vocals—it’s understated yet powerful enough to give you chills. Then there’s “Impossible Germany,” which is easily one of Wilco’s most iconic songs. This version leans heavier into its rock roots without losing the jangly guitar interplay that makes the track so memorable. What stood out here was the pacing—they didn’t rush it. They let the build-up simmer before exploding into that killer solo section. Honestly, I found myself replaying this one multiple times just to catch all the little nuances tucked into the mix. If you’re a fan of intricate instrumentation, this rendition nails it. Now, credit where it’s due—the production team behind this project deserves props too. Engineer Tom Schick and Mastered By Blaise Barton worked wonders to keep everything sounding cohesive despite the variety of contributors. And can we talk about the cover art? Art Direction from Mark Greenberg paired with Anton Coene’s photography gives the album a rustic-meets-modern aesthetic that perfectly matches the vibe of the music inside. Typography by Emily Courdelle ties it all together nicely; it’s simple but striking. One thing I appreciate about this album is how unpretentious it feels. None of these covers try to outdo the originals or reinvent them completely. Instead, they honor Wilco’s catalog while adding layers of interpretation that feel personal. Sure, some tracks hit harder than others, but overall, it’s a solid listen that doesn’t overstay its welcome. Here’s the kicker though—listening to this album made me realize something weird. Covers albums often feel like filler projects, right? But this one? It feels necessary. Like it fills a gap you didn’t even know existed. Maybe it’s because Wilco’s music has always been about connection—between people, places, emotions—and this tribute amplifies that feeling tenfold. Or maybe it’s just proof that good songs never truly belong to anyone; they evolve as they move through different hands and voices. Either way, if you’re looking for an album that’ll remind you why music matters, Wilco Covered by Various might be exactly what you need. Just don’t blame me when you find yourself humming “Impossible Germany” at random moments throughout your day.
