Review by Isreal Etangewak

Alright, let’s dive into Exhibit I Recordings, a hidden gem from Italy that blends jazz, funk, and soul like your favorite late-night jam session. This compilation feels alive—like it was made for those moments when you're vibing alone but still wanna move your feet. Props to Eugen and Martin for curating this beauty under the Exhibit I Recordings label. They’ve stitched together tracks that feel both raw and refined, like an old leather jacket with fresh stitching. Now, let me tell ya about two tracks that stuck in my head long after the record stopped spinning. First up is "Bumping On Young Street." Holy smokes, this one hits different. It starts off smooth as butter, then BAM—the bassline kicks in, groovy enough to make your hips sway even if you’re just standing there washing dishes. The horns? Oh man, they hit these punchy notes that feel like sunlight breaking through clouds. There's something nostalgic yet completely fresh about it—it reminds me of walking down a busy street at dusk, where everything feels possible. You know what I mean? Like life isn’t perfect, but damn, it’s good right now. Then there’s "Why Am I Treated So Bad." This tune punches you right in the feels. The vocals are hauntingly soulful, almost like someone whispering their pain directly into your ear. And the way the keys linger in the background? Chills. Every time I hear it, I think about all those times we've felt unseen or misunderstood. But weirdly, instead of bumming me out, it makes me feel connected—to myself, to others, to... heck, maybe even strangers on some cosmic level. That’s the magic of soul-jazz done right. What strikes me most about this album is how effortlessly it flips between moods. One moment, you're dancing around your living room; the next, you're sitting cross-legged on the floor, lost in thought. It’s not trying too hard to impress anyone, which ironically makes it impossible to ignore. And here’s the thing: listening to this record feels like finding a handwritten note tucked inside an old library book. Someone poured their heart into it without expecting much back, and somehow, that makes it more real. Who knew Italian jazz-funk could feel so personal? So yeah, do yourself a favor and give Exhibit I Recordings a spin. Just don’t blame me if you start randomly busting moves in public—or crying in the shower.

Got into Ben Sidran as a result of his earlier involvement with the Steve Miller Band, followed all the members solo careers after leaving Miller: Boz Scaggs, Tim Davis, Ben Sidran, and Steve Miller after "Sailor" "Brave New World" and "Children of the Future". Bought all their LP records back then in the late 1960's and early 1970's. "Puttin' in Time on Planet Earth" and "Feel Your Groove" are my favorite Ben Sidran recordings. Thanks for "Puttin' in Time" on "You Tube" with these recordings since I no longer have the aforementioned LP's for listening anymore.
