Album Review: Das Kantatenwerk Complete Cantatas BWV 43, 46 Vol. 12 by Johann Sebastian Bach Alright, let’s talk about this beast of an album—Das Kantatenwerk Complete Cantatas BWV 43, 46 Vol. 12. If you’re into classical music (and specifically Baroque), then yeah, this is kind of a big deal. It's like diving headfirst into the deep end of Bach's genius without even checking if there’s water in the pool first. Spoiler alert: There’s plenty of water here, and it’s crystal clear. First off, what stands out immediately is how much work went into this thing. You’ve got Gustav Leonhardt conducting one half and playing organ on the other, Nikolaus Harnoncourt rocking the violoncello, plus choirs like Chorus Viennensis and Knabenchor Hannover bringing that heavenly vibe. The lineup feels less like a regular orchestra and more like some sort of musical Avengers team-up. And honestly? They sound unstoppable. Now, onto the tracks. I’m gonna focus on two because trying to unpack all of them would probably take longer than writing my taxes—and trust me, no one wants that. Track Highlights: 1. Coro “Es Ist Dir Gesagt, Mensch, Was Gut Ist” (BWV 45) This opening track hits hard right from the get-go. Like, imagine walking into a cathedral where everything just clicks—the choir, the strings, the brass—it all comes together so perfectly that you almost forget you're supposed to be listening critically. The trumpets (courtesy of Hermann Schober, Josef Spindler, and Richard Rudolf) are bold but never overpowering, and the timpani rolls from Kurt Hammer give it this sense of urgency, like Bach himself is leaning over your shoulder whispering, “Pay attention!” What makes this piece stick with me is its emotional punch. There’s something about the way the voices blend with the instruments—it’s not just beautiful; it’s haunting. By the time the choral sections kick in, you’re already hooked. It’s the kind of track that makes you want to sit down afterward and think about life for a bit. Or maybe cry quietly in the corner. Either way, it works. 2. Aria (Soprano) “Mein Jesus Hat Nunmehr” (BWV 43) Oh man, this aria slaps. That might not be the most sophisticated way to describe it, but seriously, Peter Jelosits’ soprano vocals are next-level amazing here. His voice floats above the orchestra like a feather caught in a gentle breeze. Bob van Asperen on the organ adds these subtle flourishes underneath that make the whole thing feel intimate yet grand at the same time. The thing that gets me every time is how simple it feels. No crazy fireworks or show-offy moments—just pure, heartfelt expression. When the violins come in (shoutout to Lucy van Dael and Marie Leonhardt), they weave around the melody like ribbons on a Christmas present. It’s comforting, like wrapping yourself in a blanket while staring out at a rainy day. You don’t need anything else. Final Thoughts: If you’re looking for background music to play while folding laundry, this ain’t it. These cantatas demand your full attention, and honestly, they deserve it. Listening to this album feels like stepping back in time to 18th-century Germany, except instead of worrying about smallpox or whatever, you can just chill and enjoy the music. Here’s the weird part though—listening to this made me realize how little we actually change as people. Sure, Bach wrote these pieces centuries ago, but the emotions behind them still hit home today. Anger, hope, fear, joy—it’s all there, raw and real. Makes you wonder if humans will ever stop being messy, complicated creatures…or if that’s even a bad thing. Anyway, long story short: Das Kantatenwerk Complete Cantatas BWV 43, 46 Vol. 12 is a masterpiece. Just don’t try to listen to it all at once unless you’ve got snacks and zero plans for the day.

About Joh Sebast Bach

Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21, 1685 in Eisenach, Thuringia, Germany. A prolific German composer and organist, his sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra and solo instruments drew together the strands of the baroque genre and brought it to its ultimate maturity. Although he introduced no new forms, he enriched the prevailing German style with a robust contrapuntal technique, a control of harmonic and motivic organisation from the smallest to the largest scales, and the adaptation of rhythms and textures from abroad, particularly Italy and France. Many people consider him to be the greatest Baroque composer, and one of the greatest composers of all time. Revered for their intellectual depth, technical command and artistic beauty, J.S. Bach's works include the Brandenburg concertos, the keyboard suites and partitas, the Mass in B Minor, the St. Matthew Passion, The Musical Offering, The Art of Fugue and a large number of cantatas, of which about 220 survive. He died on July 28, 1750. Some of his sons also became composers - , , and .
