Album Review: Let Her Go Bloodshot by Hubert Laws Alright, let’s talk about this hidden gem from way back in ’67—Let Her Go Bloodshot by Hubert Laws. This album’s got that groovy Latin and Funk/Soul vibe with a strong Soul backbone. It’s not perfect, but it’s got soul (pun totally intended). Released on Atlantic Records, it’s one of those records you stumble upon and think, “Man, how did I miss this?” First off, the title track, “Let Her Go,” is unforgettable. It’s got this smooth-as-butter groove that just pulls you in. You can tell Laws poured his heart into writing it—it’s raw, emotional, and kinda feels like eavesdropping on someone working through their feelings. The horns hit hard without being over-the-top, and there’s this bassline that makes you want to nod your head even if you’re just sitting on the couch eating chips. Honestly, it’s one of those tracks that sneaks up on you when you least expect it. Then there’s “Bloodshot.” Man, this one hits different. It’s more upbeat and funky, with a beat that makes you wanna get up and move—even if you’ve got two left feet like me. There’s something about the rhythm section here; it’s tight but loose enough to feel alive. I don’t know how else to explain it, but it’s like the musicians were vibing so hard in the studio that they forgot they were recording. And honestly? That’s what makes it special. What really sticks with me about this album is how real it feels. No auto-tune, no overproduction—just good ol’ fashioned musicianship. Plus, knowing Laws wrote these tracks himself adds another layer of respect. You can hear his personality all over the place, which isn’t something you can say about every record. Here’s the thing though—I didn’t expect an album from 1967 to slap this hard in 2023. Like, who knew soul music could still feel so fresh after all these years? Maybe it’s because we’re all secretly craving music that doesn’t try too hard to impress us. Or maybe I’m just rambling now. Either way, go listen to Let Her Go Bloodshot. Trust me, your Spotify algorithm will thank you later. Oh, and random thought: If this album was a person, I bet it’d wear bell-bottoms and have a killer record collection. Just saying.

When I moved to Houston, several of the folks said Hubert was the BEST...of course, old Tony Campisi and a few dozen others, including Ronnie Laws were NOT BAD, either! lol
