Encephalon - Psychogenesis

Psychogenesis by Encephalon: A Sonic Dive into the Mechanical Abyss If you’re into music that punches you in the gut and then whispers cryptic things in your ear, Psychogenesis by Encephalon is probably your jam. Released in 2015 on Dependent Records (Germany flexing its industrial muscles again), this album is a wild mashup of rock, electronic, electro, industrial, and alternative vibes. It’s like someone took a sledgehammer to genre boundaries and said, “Nah, we’re done with labels.” And honestly? That’s why it works. The tracklist feels like an overambitious playlist at first glance—there are remixes galore, alternate versions, and even some reimaginings of earlier tracks. But don’t let the chaos scare you off; there’s gold buried in here. Two songs stuck out to me so hard they’ve been looping in my brain for days: "Outbreaker" and "Desertropolis (Sunburnt)." Let me tell ya why. First up, “Outbreaker.” This one hits like a freight train made entirely of steel drums and existential dread. The original version kicks things off with this relentless beat that just doesn’t quit, but where it really gets interesting is when you hit the remixes. “Outbreaker (Altered States)” dials up the paranoia with glitchy synths and distorted vocals—it’s like listening to someone unravel live on stage. Then there’s “Outbreaker (Onwards Oblivion),” which strips everything back down to this raw, almost tribal rhythm. You can practically feel sweat dripping from the ceiling while you listen. It’s not just a song—it’s an experience. Like running through a neon-lit labyrinth with no exit. Then there’s “Desertropolis (Sunburnt).” Oh man, this one feels like stepping into a post-apocalyptic desert wasteland where robots have taken over and started DJing. The opening riff grabs you by the collar and drags you across scorched sands while layers of pulsating electronics build around you. By the time the chorus kicks in, you’re either headbanging or questioning all your life choices—maybe both. What makes this version stand out is how stripped-down yet massive it feels compared to the other mixes. There’s something haunting about its simplicity, like staring at ruins under a blood-red sunset. Now, I won’t lie—the sheer number of remixes might overwhelm casual listeners. Tracks like “Illuminate (Into The Dark)” and “Ecophagy (Nephilim Pt 1)” blur together after a while if you’re not paying close attention. But hey, isn’t that kind of the point? Encephalon seems less interested in giving you easy answers and more focused on creating a vibe—one that sticks to your skin long after the music stops. Here’s the kicker though: despite being packed with heavy themes and mechanical grooves, Psychogenesis has this weird warmth to it. Maybe it’s because beneath all the cold synths and pounding beats, you can sense the human touch—the fingerprints of people who genuinely love what they do. Or maybe I’m just reading too much into it. Either way, this album is a beast worth wrestling with. So yeah, give Psychogenesis a spin if you want music that sounds like the future collapsing in real-time. Just don’t blame me if you find yourself humming “Outbreaker” during your next existential crisis.
