Album Review: Suspicion by Vivian Stanshall – A Quirky Time Capsule from the UK Let’s cut to the chase. Vivian Stanshall’s Suspicion, released in 2019 via Fly Records, is like finding an old vinyl at a garage sale and realizing it’s secretly a treasure. With genres spanning Oldies, Folk, World, Country, and Rock—and leaning heavily into that earthy Folk style—it’s not your run-of-the-mill record. Produced by none other than Keith Moon (yes, that Keith Moon), this album feels like a mad tea party where everyone brought their weirdest instrument. Now, let me tell ya about two tracks that stuck with me harder than last week’s curry stain on my favorite shirt. First up, the title track “Suspicion.” It’s got this sneaky vibe, like someone whispering secrets behind your back but making you laugh while they do it. The melody ambles along like a tipsy bard stumbling through a medieval tavern. You can’t help but lean in closer because you’re dying to know what happens next. Is it paranoia? Is it just good storytelling? Who cares! It’s catchy as heck and makes you wanna grab a pint and start philosophizing about life. Then there’s “Blind Date,” which hits differently. Imagine if Monty Python wrote a breakup song—quirky, slightly awkward, yet oddly profound. The lyrics are sharp enough to slice cheddar, and the delivery has this offbeat charm that’ll make you chuckle one second and ponder existential dread the next. By the time the track ends, you’re left wondering if blind dates are really worth the trouble or if we should all just stay home with our pets instead. What strikes me most about Suspicion is how unapologetically British it feels. Not the stiff-upper-lip kind of British, mind you, but the chaotic, eccentric, "let’s throw everything at the wall and see what sticks" type. It’s like Vivian took bits of his homeland’s musical heritage and gave it a good shake until something delightfully strange came out. In the end, Suspicion isn’t perfect. Some parts feel rough around the edges, and honestly, that’s part of its charm. It’s less polished gemstone and more… well, a quirky pebble you find on the beach that somehow tells you more about the ocean than any shiny rock ever could. Listening to this album feels like chatting with an old friend who’s seen too much but still finds joy in the little things. And hey, isn’t that what great music’s all about? (Oh, and fun fact: I listened to this entire album while trying to teach my cat to high-five. Neither of us succeeded, but man, did we have fun.)

Vivian Stanshall (born 21 March 1943, Shillingford, Oxfordshire, England died 5 March 1995, London, England) was an English singer-songwriter, musician, author, poet and wit. First rising to fame as an integral member of the in the late 1960's, Stanshall embarked on an idiosyncratic solo career when the Bonzos split up in 1970, astonishing in its variety and fertility but also broken up by long periods of inactivity as a consequence of his problems with alcoholism and depression. Perhaps his most famous creation was the saga of Rawlinson End, sprawling spoken-word pieces interspersed with original songs. The stories began with a relatively short track on the final Bonzo Dog Band album Lets Make Up and Be Friendly but grew into 20-minute pieces on the Show on , and resultant albums, from 1975 onwards. Depicting a world of English aristocracy that was part , part , they were a showcase for Stanshalls intricate wordplay and surreal imagination, along with his mellifluous and elastic voice. Although Stanshall could be notoriously erratic and difficult to work with, he was involved in a number of collaborations with such artists as , , and , and also created two solo albums notable for their varied musical styles and lyrics full of his perennial loves of rhyming slang, absurdist puns and tongue-twisters. After a period of creative resurgence in the late 1980's that saw a number of Rawlinson End sessions for John Peel and a West End staging of his musical play "Stinkfoot" (partly financed by and ), Stanshalls drinking worsened in the 1990's and he perished in a fire at his flat in London on 5 March 1995, probably caused by an overturned lamp as he slept. He left behind him a small but rich legacy of comic and musical originality, belying his popular image as simply the man who announced the instruments on 's album "Tubular Bells".
