Album Review: Bob Marley’s Just In Time Alright, let’s talk about Bob Marley’s Just In Time. Released in 1981 under the Studio One label, this little gem falls into the Folk, World, & Country genre but leans heavily into gospel vibes. It’s not your typical Bob Marley reggae vibe—this one’s got a spiritual twist that hits different. Produced by C.S. Dodd, it’s got that raw Studio One charm that honestly feels like sitting by a fire with good company. The album kicks off with the title track, “Just In Time,” and man, it’s hard to forget. The harmonies are smooth as butter, and there’s this uplifting energy that just makes you wanna close your eyes and soak it all in. It’s less about dancing and more about feeling centered, you know? Like someone’s handing you a warm cup of tea on a cold morning. There’s a sincerity in Marley’s voice that feels like he’s speaking directly to you, no filter. Then there’s “Part Two,” which is basically an extended version of the first track. But don’t skip it—it’s not just filler. This one lets the instruments breathe a bit more, especially the guitar work. It’s kind of hypnotic, like when you’re zoning out during a long drive and suddenly realize how good the music sounds. It’s simple but powerful, and it sticks with you long after the song ends. What I love most about this album is how stripped-back it feels. No flashy production tricks or over-the-top arrangements—just pure, heartfelt music. You can tell everyone involved was pouring their soul into it. And honestly, that’s what makes it special. Here’s the thing though—listening to Just In Time feels like discovering a hidden side of Bob Marley. Most people know him for his reggae anthems, but this gospel-infused project shows another layer to his artistry. Makes me wonder what other surprises are tucked away in his catalog. Final thought? If you’re looking for something that’ll lift your spirits without trying too hard, this is it. Oh, and fun fact—I listened to this while folding laundry, and suddenly my tiny apartment felt like a cathedral. Weird, right? But hey, that’s the magic of Bob Marley.

Notes

  • This 7" was US-released in 1981 right after Bob Marley's death. It's a completely rebuilt remix of a side Bob cut as "Bob Marley & The Spiritual Sisters" back in 1965 for Tabernacle label. It's a pure Christian record done in C&W/gospel style very popular among Jamaican believers rather than the R&B/gospel style.
  • B-side here is a newly created rhythm track of the A-side.
  • Tune has been marked as "adapted" on both sides.
  • Distributor marked as Studio 1 Records on label.
