Gnanfou EP by Al Usher: A Funky, Soulful Journey You Didn’t Know You Needed Alright, let’s talk about Gnanfou EP by Al Usher. Released back in 2007 on the German label Misericord, this little gem is a mix of Funk/Soul and Electronic vibes with hints of Minimal and Tech House. It’s not your typical album—it’s got that raw energy but also feels super smooth at the same time. And yeah, it’s kinda aged like fine wine. The standout track for me has to be “Gnanfou (Swag’s Gnanby Dub).” I mean, c’mon, that bassline? Absolute fire. It’s one of those tracks where you can almost feel the groove crawling up your spine. The rhythm hits just right—tight enough to keep you moving but loose enough to let your mind wander off into some funky daydream. Plus, there’s this subtle layering going on that sneaks up on you after a few listens. Like, wait…was that synth always there? Or did it just appear outta nowhere? Either way, it’s clever stuff. Then there’s “Here Today,” which feels like the polar opposite yet fits perfectly within the EP. Where “Gnanfou” is all about the dancefloor, “Here Today” slows things down and lets the soul shine through. There’s something so heartfelt about how the melodies unfold—it’s like Al Usher is telling a story without saying a word. Honestly, I found myself zoning out while listening to this one, picturing hazy sunsets or maybe even a chill rooftop party somewhere in Berlin. Props to him for pulling off both moods so effortlessly. Oh, quick shoutout to Tristan & Justine for the sleeve design too—it’s simple but eye-catching, kinda like the music itself. And hats off to Al Usher for wearing multiple hats here—he wrote the tunes AND produced them. That’s dedication right there! So yeah, if you’re into groovy beats with a side of introspection, Gnanfou EP should definitely be on your radar. Sure, it came out ages ago, but good music doesn’t really expire, does it? Random thought though—how wild would it be if Al Usher dropped a remix version of this EP today? Imagine hearing these tracks reimagined with modern production tricks. Now THAT would make my week.
