Album Review: Lo Pastre De Paraulas Le Berger Des Mots – Henri Gougaud Canta Occitan (1974) Alright, let’s talk about this gem of an album. Lo Pastre De Paraulas Le Berger Des Mots by Henri Gougaud is one of those records that sneaks up on you. Released in 1974, it’s a folk masterpiece from France, steeped in the rich traditions of Occitan music. The vibe? Think storytelling meets acoustic daydreaming. It’s like sitting by a fire while someone spins tales of old, but instead of logs crackling, it’s Jean-François Gaël’s guitar and flute doing all the talking. The album blends Chanson and Folk styles effortlessly, with a band lineup that feels more like a family jam session than a polished studio project. You’ve got Philippe Gumplowicz slapping the banjo and guitar, Pierre Buffenoir holding down the bass, and even some tambourine action from Daniel Laloux. It’s a tight-knit crew, and you can tell they’re having fun. Now, onto the tracks. While the whole album’s solid, two songs really stuck with me: “Montségur” and “Ome De Totas Colors.” “Montségur” hits hard—not in a loud way, but emotionally. It’s haunting, man. The violin by Johny D’Agostino weaves through the melody like a ghost, and Henri Gougaud’s voice has this raw, unfiltered quality that makes you feel like he’s whispering secrets directly to you. I couldn’t understand all the lyrics (my Occitan’s rusty, lol), but the mood says everything. It’s reflective, almost mournful, like staring at ancient ruins and wondering who walked there before you. Then there’s “Ome De Totas Colors,” which flips the script entirely. This one’s brighter, almost playful. The percussion from Yves Herwan-Chotard gives it a heartbeat, and the psaltery adds this medieval charm that makes you wanna grab a lute and join in. It’s the kind of song that makes you want to dance barefoot in a field—or at least imagine doing it. There’s something universal about it, like it belongs in every culture’s playlist for joyous moments. What’s wild is how this album manages to feel both timeless and specific. It’s rooted in the Occitan language and traditions, but the emotions are global. Love, loss, resilience—they’re all here, wrapped up in melodies that stick with you long after the record ends. Final thought? Listening to Lo Pastre De Paraulas feels like finding an old book in a dusty corner of a library. At first glance, it seems niche, maybe even forgotten. But once you dive in, you realize it’s full of wisdom and beauty. Funny enough, as I was writing this, my cat curled up next to me, purring loudly, like she was giving her seal of approval too. Weird flex, but I’m rolling with it. Check this album out if you’re into music that tells stories without needing flashy gimmicks.
