Album Review: Vers Bissextils by Pierre Louki – A Journey Through French Pop and Chanson Released in 1996, Vers Bissextils is one of those albums that sneaks up on you. It’s not flashy or overproduced—it’s just honest storytelling wrapped in the warm tones of French pop and chanson. Pierre Louki, a master lyricist, teams up with an impressive lineup of musicians to craft something that feels like flipping through old photographs. You know, the kind where every snapshot has its own quirky charm but still fits into the bigger picture. The album blends genres effortlessly—French pop meets poetic chanson—and it's clear everyone involved had fun experimenting. The label Saravah gave them room to stretch creatively, and boy, did they take advantage of it. With tracks arranged by talents like Alain Vérité and François Rauber, and instrumentation ranging from accordion (shoutout to Dominique Sucetti!) to charango (hello, Luis Pradenas!), there’s always something new to notice. Standout Tracks That Stick Let me tell ya about two songs I can’t get out of my head: "Un trou dans ma chaussette" and "Le marchand d'canons." First off, "Un trou dans ma chaussette" is cheeky as heck. Like, who starts a song talking about a hole in their sock? Only Pierre Louki could pull this off without sounding ridiculous. The lyrics are playful yet sharp—a mix of humor and self-awareness that makes you grin. And then there’s J.-C. Hoarau’s guitar work weaving through it all, giving it this laid-back vibe that perfectly matches the mood. Honestly, if your day isn’t going well, put this track on. It reminds you life doesn’t have to be so serious all the time. Then we’ve got “Le marchand d’canons,” which hits different. This one feels darker, heavier, almost cinematic. Daniel Barda’s trombone adds this brooding layer, while Francis Lai’s arrangement gives it real depth. There’s a tension here—like you’re walking down some shadowy street late at night, wondering what’s around the corner. It sticks with you because it’s not afraid to lean into discomfort. It’s haunting, but in the best way possible. Little Details That Make It Special One thing I love about Vers Bissextils is how much care went into the details. For instance, Jean-Luc Guérin’s photography for the album cover feels intimate, like peeking into someone’s personal journal. And Gérard Ségard’s design ties everything together beautifully. Even the credits read like a who’s who of French music legends—from Richard Galliano contributing music to Anita Vallejo adding her magic touch on piano. There’s also a sense of collaboration throughout the album. Everyone brings their A-game, whether it’s Marc Richard blowing clarinet lines on “Generique de la fin de la figuration sonore du bocage Vendéen” or Jack Dompierre laying down tight drum beats on multiple tracks. It’s like a big musical family gathering where everyone gets a chance to shine. Final Thoughts… Or Maybe Not? Listening to Vers Bissextils feels like sitting in a cozy café somewhere in Paris, sipping espresso while people-watching. It’s charming, clever, and occasionally moody—but never boring. What strikes me most is how timeless it feels. Sure, it came out in ’96, but these stories could’ve been written yesterday—or fifty years ago. And here’s the unexpected part: halfway through writing this review, I realized I was humming along to “Sarah va!” even though I hadn’t listened to it in days. That’s the thing about great albums—they stick with you when you least expect it. So yeah, give Vers Bissextils a spin. Who knows? You might find yourself randomly singing about socks or cannons too.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s an interesting fact about the album *Vers Bissextils* by Pierre Louki: The track "Un trou dans ma chaussette" (which translates to "A hole in my sock") kicks things off with a playful yet poetic tone, setting the stage for this unique blend of French pop and chanson. What makes it special is how Jean-Christophe Hoarau multitasks on bass, guitar, and percussion across several tracks—adding layers of depth to the music. And let’s not forget Dominique Sucetti, who plays both accordion and electric piano, bringing a rich texture that ties the whole album together. It’s like a musical patchwork quilt, stitched with care by talented hands!
