Album Review: Spleen by Richard Galliano (1999) If you’re into jazz with a twist of Latin flair, Richard Galliano’s Spleen is one of those albums that sneaks up on you. Released in 1999 under French labels Disques Dreyfus and CY Records, this record blends contemporary jazz with tango vibes in such a smooth way, it feels like sipping espresso at a Parisian café while dreaming of Buenos Aires. And yeah, it’s got that je ne sais quoi—mostly because Galliano plays the accordion like nobody else can. The album's got some killer tracks, but two really stuck with me: "Honey Fingers" and "Every Time You're Near." Let’s break ‘em down real quick. First up, "Honey Fingers." This tune starts off with Galliano’s accordion doing its thing—soft yet sharp, kinda like biting into a perfectly ripe apple. Then Luiz Augusto’s percussion kicks in, adding just enough rhythm to keep things interesting without stealing the spotlight. It’s catchy, sure, but not in an annoying way. More like…you’ll hum it later when you’re folding laundry or something. The interplay between the instruments makes it feel alive, as if the music itself has fingers dancing all over your eardrums. Then there’s "Every Time You're Near," which hits different. Frank Sitbon’s vocals give it a sultry edge, like he’s whispering secrets only you understand. There’s something about how his voice dances around the piano chords (also played by Galliano, because why not?) that feels intimate, almost too personal. Like walking past a dimly lit apartment window and catching a glimpse of someone lost in thought. By the time the bassline drops in, courtesy of Jean-Marc Jafet, you’re hooked. One thing I gotta say about Spleen is how much depth Galliano brings—not just musically, but emotionally. Whether it’s the dreamy synths or the occasional brass punch from Denis Leloup’s trombone, everything feels intentional. Even the tracklist quirks, like having slightly different versions of certain songs ("Tea For Toots" vs. "Tea for Toots"), add charm instead of confusion. Honestly, listening to this album feels like flipping through old polaroids. Each song captures a mood, a moment, a memory. And while it might lean more toward chill than chaotic, don’t mistake calmness for lack of personality. Final thought? Listening to Spleen made me realize something weird—Richard Galliano could probably make even elevator music sound profound. Maybe next time we’ll catch him scoring a sci-fi movie or composing jingles for toothpaste commercials. Who knows? But until then, grab yourself a copy of Spleen and let it do its magic.

In 1991, on the advice of he met in 1983, Richard Galliano is back on his roots, returning to the traditional repertoire of waltz, java, tangos and ballads he had long ignored. Reviving the spirit of and , it allows the accordion to get rid of its old image by working on rhythm conception, changing harmonies, which acclimate to jazz.
