Review by Meliza Haradinaj

Alright, buckle up. This ain’t your typical fluffy album review. We’re diving into Rachmaninoff de Artur Rubinstein et Eugene Ormandy, the 1973 beast that still slaps harder than most modern classical releases. Yeah, it’s French, yeah, it’s on RCA Victor Red Seal, but none of that matters unless you’ve got ears for this kind of magic. First off, let’s talk about the Adagio Sostenuto. Holy crap, does Rubinstein make this thing sing or what? It’s like he took Rachmaninoff’s soul and just shoved it right into the piano keys. Every note feels deliberate, raw, almost violent in its emotion. You don’t listen to this—you feel it. There’s no room for chill here, man. The orchestra under Ormandy backs him up like they’re daring him to go even harder. By the time it builds up, I’m not even sure if I’m alive anymore. Like…what just happened to me? Then there’s Moderato - Allegro, which hits like a freight train at full speed. Rubinstein doesn’t mess around—he comes out swinging from the first chord. This track is relentless, pounding energy straight into your skull. If you’re not gripping something while listening, you’re doing it wrong. The interplay between the piano and the orchestra is nuts; it’s like they’re having some kind of musical fistfight, but somehow it’s beautiful. You can practically hear the sweat dripping off everyone involved. It’s exhausting in the best way possible. Look, this album isn’t perfect—it’s better than perfect. It’s messy, intense, borderline unhinged, and that’s why it sticks with you. Most recordings of Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto feel polite, calculated, like they’re trying too hard to impress critics. Not this one. This is raw power wrapped in velvet gloves. And here’s the kicker: after all these years, I still can’t figure out how Rubinstein pulled this off at his age (he was pushing 80 when they recorded it!). The dude didn’t just play—he owned that damn concerto. Makes you wonder if we’ll ever see another musician rip through music like this again. Probably not. So grab a copy, crank it loud, and let it wreck you. Trust me, you won’t regret it. Oh, and hey—don’t forget to thank France for letting this fireball loose on the world. No idea why they don’t brag about it more.

i played this number early in my piano career and in college with an orchestra and I still thrill with every note, just listening to the inimitable Rubinstein, whom I auditioned under as a child, as a young member of the National Fraternity of Student Musicians. I didn't realize the beauty of it then, today, it brings tears to my eyes!

My favorite recording of the work. I like the fact that he takes the coda at a reasonable pace, not too fast like most soloists (including the composer!) do.

I greatly prefer the slower tempo of the older performances. Now the Pianists all seem to play it as fast as possible just to prove they are capable of playing it as fast as possible.
