Turn - In Position

Review by DiLynn Stephens

In Position by Turn: A Raw Slice of Irish Rock That Still Hits Home Alright, let me just say this upfront—In Position isn’t your typical polished rock album. Released back in 2002 by the Irish band Turn (yeah, they’re from Ireland, not some random corner of Europe), it’s got that raw, unfiltered charm you don’t hear much these days. Under the Nurture Records label, this record dives deep into Pop Rock, Alternative Rock, and even flirts with Acoustic vibes. And honestly? It works. I’ll be real with ya—I didn’t expect to connect with this album as hard as I did. But there are moments here that stick to your soul like gum on a hot summer sidewalk. Two tracks, in particular, have been looping in my head for weeks now: “Heartattack” and “After We Go (Again).” First up, “Heartattack.” Man, this song hits different. It starts off slow, almost hesitant, like someone trying to catch their breath after running too far. Then BAM—it explodes into this emotional gut-punch of guitars and vocals that feel so damn honest. You can practically hear the frustration and longing bleeding through every note. I dunno about you, but when life feels like one big mess, this track somehow makes sense of it all. Like, yeah, we’re screwed up, but hey, at least we’re alive, right? Then there’s “After We Go (Again).” This one sneaks up on you. At first, it feels kinda mellow, maybe even forgettable. But give it time. By the second chorus, something clicks. The melody latches onto you, and suddenly you’re humming it while brushing your teeth or waiting in line at the grocery store. It’s catchy without being annoying, heartfelt without being cheesy. There’s just enough grit in the guitar riffs to remind you it’s rock, but also enough softness to make you stop and think. Honestly, it’s the kind of song that makes you wanna grab an old friend and yell, “Remember us?! Remember how wild things used to be?!” The rest of the album has its gems too. Tracks like “Catch On You” and “Every Mistake” keep the energy alive, while “The Reprise” throws in a curveball with its stripped-down vibe. Even though the production ain’t perfect—and trust me, you can tell—it adds to the whole thing. It’s like listening to a live show where everyone’s pouring their hearts out, no matter what. Here’s the kicker, though. Listening to In Position feels like finding an old Polaroid photo tucked inside a book. It’s faded around the edges, sure, but the memories it brings back hit harder than ever. Maybe that’s why this album still resonates. Or maybe it’s because sometimes, music doesn’t need to reinvent the wheel—it just needs to speak to you. So yeah, if you’re looking for something slick and shiny, this probably ain’t it. But if you want an album that feels human, flawed, and real, give In Position a spin. Just don’t blame me if “Heartattack” ends up stuck in your brain for days. Oh, and hey—next time you’re feeling lost, crank this record loud. Who knows? Maybe Turn will help you find your way…or at least distract you long enough to laugh at how weird life is.

About Turn

Turn were formed in 1998 by long-time friends Ollie Cole (vocals, guitars) and Ian Melady (drums). Since then they've released two albums, 2000's Antisocial (Infectious) and 2003's Forward, on their own Nurture label, which crashed straight into the Irish Top Twenty. They've built up a reputation as one of the finest live bands to grace a stage, with ever-growing audiences enraptured by their captivating stage presence and quality tunesmithery. Turn finished 2004 on a high, scoring highly in the prestigious Hot Press Readers Poll, where music fans voted them No. 5 Best Band and No. 6 Best Live band. Forward was named No. 7 Best Album, while frontman Ollie Cole was voted No. 4 Best Irish Musician, No. 6 Best Irish Male and No. 8 Best Irish Songwriter. They signed to celebrated London-based independent label Setanta (The Divine Comedy, A House) in early 2005 and released their third and final album, 'TURN' before calling it a day in July 2006.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The album *In Position* by Turn, released in 2002, blends Pop Rock, Alternative Rock, and Acoustic styles seamlessly. It’s like a musical chameleon, shifting between raw energy and heartfelt melodies. One standout track, "Heartattack," even gets a second life with "The Reprise," offering listeners two different takes on the same vibe. Not many Irish bands from that era pulled off such versatility under the Nurture Records label. Pretty neat, right?
