Review by Jonathan Strickland

Summerwind by Brown, Alexander, Griffin, Drew: A Jazz Odyssey That Still Kicks Ass Let’s get one thing straight—this ain’t your grandma’s elevator jazz. Released in ‘98 under Kingston World (shoutout to the label heads who let this beast loose), Summerwind is a gritty, soulful punch to the ears that doesn’t apologize for being raw and real. This album doesn’t just sit there; it grabs you by the collar and says, “Listen up.” And trust me, you’ll wanna listen. First off, kudos to Peter Maltz for the design work—it’s slick but not overdone, kinda like the music itself. But enough about visuals; let’s dive into what really matters here: the tracks. There are some bangers on this record, sure, but two stuck with me harder than gum on a summer sidewalk: “Swamp Fire” and “Consider.” “Swamp Fire”? Holy crap, man. It starts slow, almost teasing you with its swampy vibes, then BAM—it explodes into this chaotic groove that feels like dancing in mud puddlets as lightning cracks overhead. You can practically smell the bayou when this track hits. It’s messy, wild, and unapologetically alive. If I had to pick one song from this album to play at 2 AM while staring into the void, it’d be this one. No question. And then there’s “Consider,” which sneaks up on ya like a cat in the dark. The alternate version throws even more curveballs, layering rhythms that make your brain go, “Wait… what?” It’s moody as hell, brooding without trying too hard. Every time those horns kick in, it’s like someone lit a match inside my skull. Honestly? I didn’t think I could feel so much from a saxophone solo until now. Respect. The rest of the album keeps pace too—tracks like “Street Life” bring the heat, while “Blues For Groundhog” proves these guys know how to chill out without losing their edge. Oh, and don’t sleep on “Delaunay’s Dilemma,” either. That tune slaps harder than most modern jazz acts combined. But here’s the kicker—the whole damn thing feels timeless. Like, yeah, it came out in ‘98, but if someone told me this was recorded yesterday, I’d believe ‘em. Maybe that’s why it still resonates today—or maybe it’s because we’re all secretly craving something this bold and untamed. So yeah, give Summerwind a spin. Just don’t expect perfection. Expect grit, passion, and a couple moments that’ll slap you upside the head and leave you grinning like an idiot. And hey, isn’t that what great jazz is supposed to do? P.S. Shoutout to whoever thought putting “Put Your Little Foot Right Out” twice was a good idea—it totally worked. Mystery solved.
