Album Review: ウガンダ (Uganda) by Akira Ishikawa & Count Buffaloes Akira Ishikawa & Count Buffaloes’ ウガンダ (Uganda) is one of those albums that sneaks up on you. Released in 2006 via Shadoks Music outta Germany, this record blends rock, jazz, and African vibes into a genre-bending stew that's hard to shake off. It’s proggy, jazzy, and full of unexpected turns—kinda like wandering through an open-air market where every stall has something new to offer. The album kicks off with “求愛 = Na Tu Penda Sana,” which translates roughly to "courtship" or "love plea." This track sticks with me because it opens like a sunrise over the savanna—slow, warm, but with this creeping tension that builds as layers of percussion and horns pile on. The rhythm section grooves so hard it feels alive, while the brass punches through like a call to action. You can tell 石川晶 (Akira Ishikawa) and 村岡建 (Ken Murao) poured their hearts into the arrangements here; there's just no way they didn’t sweat over every detail. And honestly? That dedication pays off big time. By the end, you’re not sure if you wanna dance or sit back and let your brain melt from all the complexity. Maybe both? Another standout is “動物達と夜明け = Wanyama Na Mapambazuko” (“Animals and Dawn”). This tune takes its sweet time setting the scene—a slow burn punctuated by haunting melodies and eerie animal-like sounds woven into the mix. When the band finally lets loose around the halfway mark, it's glorious chaos. The interplay between the guitar work and the horn lines gives me goosebumps every single time. There’s something primal yet refined about how everything comes together. Like, yeah, we’re talking animals waking up at dawn, but it doesn’t feel chaotic—it feels... intentional. Purposeful. Like nature itself wrote the damn thing. What makes ウガンダ special isn’t just its technical brilliance—it’s how unapologetically adventurous it is. Sure, some parts might lean a little too prog for casual listeners, but even then, there’s always something happening to grab your attention. Whether it’s the driving rhythms, the lush harmonies, or the sheer audacity of throwing African influences into jazz-rock without blinking, this album keeps you guessing. And really, isn’t that what great music should do? Keep you guessing—and maybe make you rethink what you thought you knew about genres altogether. Fun fact: Listening to this record made me realize I need to learn Swahili—or at least figure out how to pronounce these song titles properly. But hey, any album that inspires me to Google random languages probably deserves more than just a listen.

During 'pygmy' I kept expecting Jimi Hendrix to start singing at any moment and that bass. Wow. This was on some ones ultimate Japanese jazz fusion list and I can see why.

These guys were so good but were so ignored in North America. I bought "Emergency" basically by mistake back then and my mind was blown. I'm thinking (just guessing really) that Frank Zappa and Akira must have listened to each others music. I'm just say'n.
