Jason Steel - The Weight Of Care

The Weight of Care by Jason Steel: A Folk Odyssey That Kicks You in the Gut Let’s cut to the chase—Jason Steel’s The Weight of Care isn’t just another folk album. Released back in 2012 on Rif Mountain Records, this UK-born gem punches above its weight with raw emotion and an eclectic mix of instruments that’ll leave your ears ringing (in a good way). It's not perfect, but damn if it doesn't feel alive. First off, let’s talk about “Jessica’s Fingertip.” Yeah, weird name for a track, right? But holy hell, does it stick. The song feels like someone ripped open their chest and handed you their heart. Nancy Wallace’s vocals float over Steven Collins’ electric bassline like smoke curling outta a campfire. And then there’s that banjo riff from Steel himself—it sneaks up on ya, grabs hold, and refuses to let go. This one gets under your skin because it’s messy, human, real. No shiny polish here; just grit and soul. Then there’s “Six Reasons,” which hits different every time you listen to it. Sam Barton’s trumpet cuts through like a knife while Robert Spriggs’ viola adds this haunting undertone that makes you wanna sit down and rethink all your life choices. The lyrics? Sparse, but they land hard. Dom Cooper joins in on vocals, and suddenly it’s less of a song and more of a gut punch wrapped in melody. You don’t forget something like that easily. This album ain’t shy about showing off its credits either. With accordion wizardry from Nancy Wallace, Jonny Bridgwood holding down the basslines, and Daniel Gardener keeping things tight on drums, it’s clear everyone brought their A-game. Even Alex Potter’s photography and Dom Cooper’s design work scream attention to detail. These folks weren’t screwing around—they built something solid. But here’s the kicker: why’d they put “Jessica’s Fingertip” three freakin’ times on the tracklist?! Is it a mistake? Some kind of artistic statement? Beats me. But honestly, after listening to this record, I’m too tired to care. Maybe that’s the point. So yeah, The Weight of Care. It’s flawed, sure, but it’s also unforgettable. Like finding a splinter deep in your thumb—you hate it at first, but later you realize it made you pay attention. Go ahead, give it a spin. Just don’t blame me when it sticks with you for days.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s an interesting fact: The album *The Weight of Care* by Jason Steel is a true team effort. It features a wide range of talented musicians, each bringing something unique to the table. For instance, Nancy Wallace not only contributed on accordion but also helped arrange the music and co-wrote some of the scores. Dom Cooper, who handled the artwork and design, even lent his voice to the tracks. With instruments like banjo, trumpet, viola, and electric bass blending together, it’s a rich mix of folk sounds that feels both personal and expansive. Oh, and fun detail—three different versions of "Jessica's Fingertip" made it onto the album! Clearly, they really loved that one.
