Album Review: Japanese Georgians by Ksenia Kamikaza Ksenia Kamikaza’s Japanese Georgians is a genre-bending journey through electronic soundscapes that feel both intimate and otherworldly. Released in 2015 under the Latvian label Platz Für Tanz, this album dives deep into an eclectic mix of styles like Tech House, Ambient, Minimal Techno, and even Witch House. It's not your typical electronic record—this one carries a certain rawness, almost as if Kamikaza pulled sounds straight from her subconscious and gave them room to breathe. One track that sticks out is “Milestiba.” With its haunting layers and glitchy undertones, it feels like wandering through a foggy forest at night. The version featuring Ieva Adamss & Diana Payton adds an ethereal vocal layer that elevates the mood to something cinematic. You don’t just listen to this track; you live inside it for those few minutes. It’s the kind of song that makes you stop whatever you’re doing and just… absorb. Another standout is “Journey In My Pocket,” which leans more into Deep House territory but still retains that signature Kamikaza unpredictability. The beat is understated yet hypnotic, pulling you in with its subtlety. There’s a moment around the halfway mark where everything drops out except for a faint synth line—it’s so simple, yet it hits hard. Tracks like these remind me why electronic music can be so powerful when done right: it doesn’t need flashy tricks, just moments that resonate. What strikes me most about Japanese Georgians is how unapologetically Latvian it feels while also being universal. Latvia isn’t exactly known as a hub for electronic music, but Kamikaza proves there’s magic brewing in the Baltics. Her ability to blend genres without forcing anything is impressive. Sure, some transitions between tracks might feel abrupt, and maybe the production could’ve been slightly tighter—but honestly? That kinda works here. It keeps things human. The album closes with “Going After,” a downtempo piece that feels like drifting off into a dream. As the final notes fade away, you’re left wondering what exactly you just experienced—and isn’t that the mark of great art? Final thought: If you ever find yourself lost in Riga on a cold winter night, put this album on. It’ll either guide you home or make you question if you even want to go back. Either way, it’s worth it.
