The Chantoozies - Witch Queen

Album Review: Witch Queen by The Chantoozies (1987) Alright, let’s talk about Witch Queen, the quirky gem from The Chantoozies that dropped in 1987. This album is a wild mashup of electronic and rock vibes with a heavy dose of synth-pop swagger. It’s like someone took a time machine to the '80s and bottled up all the neon feels. Released across Germany, Australia, Sweden, and Europe via labels like RCA, Blow Up, and Mushroom, this record has been floating around the globe for decades—and honestly, it still holds up. First off, you gotta give props to the crew behind the scenes. Producer David Courtney had his hands on most of the tracks, while the band itself took charge of “B2.” And shoutout to Ian MacKenzie for engineering magic—this thing sounds crisp even today. Oh, and can we just appreciate Andrew Lehmann’s photography? That cover art screams ‘80s cool without trying too hard. Now, onto the tunes. I’ve got two standouts that I can’t get outta my head: “The Chantoozie Shuffle” and “Witch Queen (7” Mix).” “The Chantoozie Shuffle” is exactly what it sounds like—a boppy, infectious anthem made for strutting down the street or awkwardly dancing at a party. It’s got this playful energy that’s impossible not to love. Brett Goldsmith and Ally Fowler kill it here, delivering vocals that are equal parts cheeky and charming. It reminds me of those moments when you’re vibing in your room, air-guitaring like no one’s watching. You know what I mean? Then there’s “Witch Queen (7” Mix),” which is kinda the crown jewel of the album (pun totally intended). L. Vegas and P. Vegas nailed the songwriting on this one—it’s moody yet danceable, with synths that feel like they’re straight outta a retro sci-fi flick. There’s something hypnotic about how the beat builds up, pulling you into its spell. Like, yeah, I’d totally listen to this if I were casting spells in a neon-lit dungeon. Don’t judge. One thing that strikes me about Witch Queen is how unapologetically fun it is. Sure, some tracks might feel a bit dated now, but isn’t that part of the charm? Listening to this album feels like stepping back into an era where big hair and bigger dreams ruled the world. Final thought: If aliens ever landed on Earth and asked for a taste of ‘80s music, I’d hand them Witch Queen. Not because it’s perfect, but because it’s real. And honestly, who wouldn’t wanna see a UFO boogie to “The Chantoozie Shuffle”?

That's Montsalvat! Our family's go to place for interstate visitors, us, picnic on the lawns, the violin maker. I saw the real David Helfgott and his wife perform there. I love it. Of course I love this clip too. Love to you and yours, Jan xxx

This is much better than the 1971 original version. This one is so Stock Atkins and Waterman I'm surprised Bananarama also didn't do a cover of this too after Venus.

With all due respect. This eighties mix of a "swamp rock" song to me is simply terrible. To me I get the feeling that they riding the wave of the Banarama song, Venus and to me it fails dismally.

There are some songs that are not meant to be touched and there are some songs that can be developed... this one is the earlier however I am interested in viewing another rendition of it.

I really like the group but it's a no for me.
