Album Review: Son Of Nothing by The Wolfhounds Released in 1988, Son Of Nothing by The Wolfhounds is one of those indie rock gems that feels like it was plucked straight outta the UK’s underground scene. With its raw energy and unpolished charm, this record doesn’t try too hard to impress—it just does. Released under the September label, the album wears its indie heart on its sleeve, thanks in part to the production touch of The Meerkats and some solid engineering from Andy Fryer and Joe Hornof. Let’s talk tracks. “Torture” kicks things off with a jagged edge, the kind of song that grabs you by the collar and shakes you awake. It’s not overly complicated—just punchy guitars, a driving rhythm, and vocals that feel more like a snarl than a melody. But damn, it sticks with you. Maybe it’s the way the lyrics seem to claw at something deeper, or maybe it’s just how effortlessly it captures that late ‘80s post-punk vibe without drowning in nostalgia. Either way, it’s the kind of opener that makes you want to crank the volume and annoy your neighbors. Then there’s “Son Of Nothing,” the title track, which hits different. If “Torture” is all sharp edges, this one’s got a brooding, almost hypnotic quality to it. The guitar work here feels like it’s wandering through a fog, while the vocals drift somewhere between defiance and despair. You can almost picture the band huddled in a dimly lit studio, hashing this one out until it felt right. It’s the kind of track that sneaks up on you, lingering long after the last note fades. Tracks like “Second Son” and “Cottonmouth” round out the album with their own quirks, but they don’t quite hit the same highs as the first two. Still, they keep the momentum going, never letting the energy dip too far. And honestly, that’s what makes Son Of Nothing so enjoyable—it’s not perfect, but it doesn’t need to be. It’s real, unfiltered, and refreshingly human. Looking back, it’s wild to think this album came out over three decades ago. Indie rock has evolved in a million directions since then, but Son Of Nothing still feels relevant, like a snapshot of a time when music didn’t need to be glossy to resonate. Honestly, I kinda wish The Wolfhounds had stuck around longer—they had something special. Or maybe it’s better this way, leaving us with just enough to remember them by but not too much to spoil the magic. Who knows? Anyway, if you’re into raw, no-frills rock with a dash of grit, this one’s worth a spin.
